1. Double denim, or the Canadian tuxedo

Wear it as

light-wash jacket, plain white or grey tee, indigo straight-leg jeans, white leather trainers.

Best on

pale or stonewashed, two shades off whatever the jeans are.

Bing Crosby was the biggest singer in America in 1951, six years past his Best Actor Oscar for Going My Way. He came to the Hotel Vancouver from a hunting trip in denim from collar to cuff, and the desk clerk, Art Cameron, turned him away. A bellhop recognised him and he got his room.

Levi's heard, and made him a denim tuxedo jacket with a leather patch sewn inside reading Notice to Hotel Men Everywhere. They presented it at Elko, Nevada, where he was honorary mayor. Levi's own historian tells the story.

Denim over denim has been a Canadian tuxedo ever since. The Canadian part came later, from Americans who thought the whole idea sounded like something a Canadian would wear.

Seventy-five years on, the rule is about how far apart the two washes sit. Two shades is the working distance.

Under the jacket, a white crew-neck tee is the plainest answer and a grey marl the next. A thin cream knit works when it is colder. Below, indigo straight-leg jeans are the default, black straight-leg reads sharper. On the feet, white leather trainers, brown leather boots, or black canvas.

Worn, it goes pale at the shoulders, white down the middle, dark from the waist. Jacket open, sleeves at the wrist, tee untucked over the waistband, mid-rise straight leg breaking once on a white leather trainer.

2. Over a white tee and worn-out jeans

Blue Levi's, white T-shirt, red baseball cap in the back pocket. Annie Leibovitz shot that from behind for the cover of Born in the U.S.A. in 1984, on assignment for Rolling Stone, and the tee and the cap are the two light patches against all that denim.

Wear it as

trucker over a white crew-neck tee, jeans with real fading at the thigh and seat, work boots or plain trainers.

Best on

a jacket that earned its fading by being worn.

The jeans on that cover were made between 1966 and 1971, which put them past thirteen years old in the photograph. Fading that age sits where a body creases the cloth.

Printed whiskers give the other kind away. They go on over a board before the jean has been worn, so they land on both legs at the same angle and the same height.

Mary Davis teaches fashion history at Yale, and her reading of that cover for NPR runs a line from denim's nineteenth-century workwear roots to a songwriter singing about late twentieth-century labour. Denim, in her phrase, is a blank canvas. The same piece has Beyoncé in 501 Curve jeans and a trucker for the brand's 2025 campaign, a year after she put "Levii's Jeans" on Cowboy Carter.

3. Sleeves pushed up

A trucker cuff fastens with one or two buttons. Above it the sleeve runs straight and full to the wrist bone, cut square through the elbow.

That cut is why denim bunches and holds at the elbow where a shirt would roll into a flat turn-back. Two buttons hold the cuff closed and give the stacked cloth something to sit against. Count them before you buy.

a close-cut arm and two buttons at the cuff.

4. Under a parka, collar showing

Manchester in the nineties. Denim jackets went round second-hand, got stitched and restitched, and were worn under army parkas over band tees.

Wearing both was a weather decision made by people buying whatever the market had that week. The fishtail parkas came off army surplus, cut over a uniform with the room already built in, so a denim jacket went underneath.

Zip one of those to mid-chest and the denim collar stands above the parka collar. Liam Gallagher fronted Oasis in that through the decade.

Wear it as

trucker buttoned, parka over it zipped to mid-chest, denim collar standing above the parka collar, straight jeans, trainers.

Best on

a fold-down collar, tall enough to stand above a zipped parka.

5. With slim jeans and a band tee

A trucker stops at the waist and a slim leg runs unbroken to the shoe, so you end up roughly a third above and two thirds below.

Best on

a hem that lands on the natural waist, over a tee whose print has faded to grey.

You can check the ratio without a tape. Stand square, look down, and find the point where the jacket hem crosses your body. Above it should read as the shorter of the two zones. A hem at the hip bone puts the division at the halfway mark.

6. Buttoned up under a longer coat

A trucker ends at the natural waist. The coat over it has to end far enough below that for the eye to read them as separate layers.

A coat stopping at the hip puts two hems within a few inches of each other. Go to the knee or below and the distance is there. PORTER's spring 2026 styling puts a cropped denim jacket buttoned up beneath a full-cut trench.

Button the trucker to the top, leave the trench or wool coat open over it, straight trousers below, loafers or boots.

Best on

flat buttons and a plain hem, smooth enough to slide under a lining.

7. The corduroy-collared version

Levi's and Lee both put a corduroy collar on a blanket-lined jacket in the sixties, for men working outdoors through a winter. Lee called theirs the Storm Rider. The collar sat in a different cloth and usually a different colour from the body, and it went up against the wind.

Sixty years later the collar is decoration, and the gradient trucker at $109 carries brown corduroy against a wash that runs pale at the centre and deep at the shoulders. Brown corduroy asks for brown or tan below it.

8. Buttoned to the top with a bandana

Cholo style crystallised in Los Angeles among first and second-generation Mexican Americans, running back to the pachucos of the thirties and forties. The elements are documented: baggy Dickies khakis or denim, flannels buttoned to the top, a bandana at the neck or head. West Coast hip-hop still wears it.

Isabela Raygoza, who edits Billboard Español, gives the reason people dressed this way in one line: the clothes gave them a sense of belonging to a community.

Folded to a band round the head, worn at the throat, or hanging from a back pocket, each placement reads differently inside the community, and so does the colour. Copying the look from outside means copying a set of signals that carry meaning to the people who set them.

Best on

a button front that closes to the top of the collar.

9. Plain, and left alone for a year

Amekaji came out of a postwar Japanese interest in American surplus, workwear and Ivy League clothes. The denim end of it sits in Okayama and Osaka, where Iron Heart, Momotaro, Studio D'Artisan, Samurai, Full Count, The Real McCoy's, Sugar Cane and Pure Blue Japan cut Type II and Type III jackets on old shuttle looms. The word trucker came from there: Japanese collectors coined it in the eighties for a jacket Levi's had been selling for twenty years under a lot number.

Raw denim takes its colour on the surface of the yarn, so wear turns the cloth pale wherever it creases.

Wear it as

raw or lightly washed trucker, plain heavyweight tee, raw selvedge jeans with the cuff turned once, leather boots.

Best on

raw or lightly washed indigo, undistressed, with the weave still stiff.

Month one, it is a stiff dark jacket that holds the shape of the hanger. By month six the elbows and forearms have gone a shade lighter, and the hem shows where hands go in. At a year the pale lines follow the arm and the waist.

The stand-collar trucker at $110 is the plainest jacket on our rail: dark denim, contrast stitching, Type III bones, and a collar that folds up when the wind gets round it.

10. When the jacket is the loudest thing you own

Sixteen denim jackets are on our rail. Eleven carry a print, a bleach, an embroidery or a field of studs. The remaining five change the pattern instead, with military button columns, zip fronts or a dirty overdye.

The tiger-stripe bleach at $81. The leopard-collared black at $82. The five-strap at $86. The thorn embroidery at $94. The sand camo at $47.

Two belong to another pattern entirely. The Napoleon crop at $89 and the military version at $91 have a collarless round neck, a zip and two columns of buttons. The neck is open, the front runs clean from shoulder to hem, and the hem sits above the natural waist. High-waisted trousers are the thing that closes that gap.

Everything else in the outfit drops to a single colour in plain cloth.

Wear it as

printed or treated jacket, black tee, black straight-leg trousers, black boots or plain white trainers.

Best on

anything printed, bleached, embroidered or studded, over one plain colour.

The check that decides all ten

The hem. A trucker stops at the natural waist. Trousers sat there in the early sixties and mostly sit lower now, so high-waisted trousers put the waistband exactly where the jacket ends.

Arms down

If the jacket hem and the trouser waistband are within an inch of each other, the outfit reads as one piece. Further apart and you need a longer tee to fill the gap.

Arms up

If the jacket lifts to show a band of skin, take the next size up.

Buttoned, sitting

A trucker that buttons while you are sitting will get buttoned. One that only closes standing up will live its life open.
