The Part They All Agree On

Volume play. A fitted top with something enormous over it, or an enormous top over something narrow, and never two of the same size stacked.

None of that costs anything. It is a question of cut, and cut is free. Put a fitted tank under a jacket two sizes up and it does the job as well as anything with a name in the collar. Fūga puts the weight at roughly sixty per cent below the waist and forty above, which tells you where the money goes. Techwear Storm, who sell this stuff, are blunter about it: pants give you the biggest visual change per pound.

What decides whether it lands has nothing to do with the label.

Start with where the outer layer stops. Cropped above the hip bone gives you a horizontal line across the torso and the volume below reads as deliberate. Dropped past the hip and the same jacket reads as one that does not fit. There is no contrast left to see, just fabric ending somewhere near the thigh.

The ankle is next, and Techwear Storm has useful names for what happens down there. A clean stack sits the hem on the shoe and breaks it once. A slight pool lets it gather and cover more of the foot. A toggled hem draws in at the bottom, so the leg finishes narrow over a heavy sole. Pick one and stay with it. A trouser that stacks on one side and pools on the other is usually a hemming problem.

And there is how many things are loud at once, which should be one. If the jacket is enormous, the trousers can be wide but not also cropped and also flared and also strapped.

The fitted layer is meant to be boring and cheap, in the same black as everything else you own.

Where They Disagree

What goes on your legs. Fūga says skinny died with the Whole Lotta Red era and the bottom half now needs to be wide and heavy. nss magazine describes the whole thing as huge shoulders over skinny pants. Qwintry says baggy cargos and super-flared jeans. Grazia, writing about Destroy Lonely, calls tight trousers his signature. All four are describing the same people in the same years.

How black it has to be. On this, Fūga runs a ninety-five per cent rule. Qwintry lists burgundy, navy, purple and dark green as core. SNKRDUNK reckons khaki and ivory have come up. The most-shared styling posts under the tag are wearing white fur hats.

What kind of clothing it even is. Techwear Storm frames it as technical: engineered silhouettes, breathable base layers, moisture management, cargo pockets that earn their place. Fūga’s headline says the opposite in as many words, and calls it a code. Two shops selling to the same search term, describing the thing they are selling as opposites.

Fūga, nss, Qwintry and Grazia are describing the same four men over the same five years.

Before You Pay

The black. Dye chemists build a neutral black out of blue, red and yellow chromophores, because no single black dye exists. Those components fade at different rates, and whichever goes first decides whether a garment drifts brown or grey. Buy the pieces that get worn together at the same time, from the same maker, and wash them the same way.

The matte. Matte is a manufacturing grade you can look up. Yarn suppliers put titanium dioxide into the melt before spinning: zero per cent for bright, about 0.3 for semi-dull, around two for full-dull. Those particles sit inside the fibre, so a full-dull shell is still matte when you have worn it out. A matte that came from a surface coating goes shiny at the elbows within a season.

The silver. Look at the inner shank of a ring, or the tongue of a clasp. Sterling goes dark evenly, all over, and a cloth takes it off; plating fails from underneath and comes out patchy exactly where the piece rubs. On a chain worn daily that is weeks to months. Weight settles anything the eye leaves open, since sterling runs roughly double a plated piece the same size.

The leather. Bend a section. Hide wrinkles and shifts colour as it folds; synthetic springs back flat, because uniformity is what it was made to have. Full grain and top grain are the grades worth buying, genuine leather sits below both despite the name, and bonded is ten to twenty per cent leather fibre mixed with polyurethane. Peeling is a coating losing its grip on what is under it, which is why bonded and PU do it and conditioner saves neither.

The boots. A welted boot has a strip round the edge stitched through to the outsole, so a cobbler can cut it and sew on a new one. Glued boots cannot be resoled. Between the two sits the bonwelt, where a decorative strip is glued on and a row of stitching runs through it holding nothing. Compare its stitch density against the stitching elsewhere on the boot; a cosmetic row rarely matches.

The sunglasses. Acetate is cut from sheet and the colour runs through it, while injection-moulded frames are sprayed, so a cut edge tells you which you have. Hinges are where the cheap ones die: a metal barrel hinge with a wire core outlasts an all-plastic one by years. The UV400 rating is printed on the arm or it is not, and no amount of frame quality substitutes for it.

The black and the leather want maintaining as well. Optical brighteners in ordinary detergent absorb ultraviolet and re-emit it as blue, which reads as a chalky cast over black. A black gone grey in the machine often comes back on a detergent without them. Leather wants conditioning once or twice a year and nothing else.

The Actual Garments

On top, a fitted long-sleeve in black, or a ribbed tank.

Over it, any of these. A cropped bomber. A leather moto, which is the piece that came in through Hedi Slimane. A padded or puffed shell that holds its shape when you move. Or an oversized hoodie, which is the cheapest entry and the one most people start with.

Below, the argument: wide cargos that stack over the shoe, or flared skinny leather, or plain black denim, or leggings. Grazia lists flared skinny black leather trousers as a Destroy Lonely signature; Fūga says wide and heavy; both are being worn.

On the feet, heavy black boots. Combat, moto, or something with a platform.

On the hands and neck, the sources split again. Grazia says it is not Opium if the chain is not iced out, and in the same breath lists oxidised silver wristbands and bullet belts. Those are two different metal languages, one bright and one dark, and Fūga’s rule is to pick one and stay in it. Take that advice, because a diamond chain over oxidised silver puts two people’s jewellery on one person.

Small things that turn up across all of it: black nail polish, studded leather wristbands, a belt with visible hardware, and sunglasses worn indoors.

The Head

In the Whole Lotta Red years the face went a long way. Carti wore fangs and horns, painted his face, and the concert crowds copied the face paint. That has receded. What survived is the covering: a balaclava, a ski mask, or a hood pulled up and worn indoors, which does the same job of removing the face without needing makeup.

The hair moved with it. Long, bleached, dyed red or black, and left loose.

Of the two, copy the covering and leave the paint. A black balaclava under a hood costs almost nothing and works in cold weather. That is the fastest way to stop plain black clothes reading as gym kit.

What Changed After MUSIC

MUSIC arrived on 14 March 2025 and broke the single-day streaming record for the year. The clothes had already moved by then. Writing after the album, 34th Street noted that Carti had kept the fundamentals, meaning the dark colours and the statement jewellery. The outfits themselves had become less extravagant, leaning away from the punk end and back toward the high-fashion streetwear of his earlier years.

The other change matters more if you are building this. Opium started producing. There is a Pelle Pelle collaboration, a Mitchell and Ness one from October 2025, and an Under Armour project announced in March 2026. Carti’s creative director Rose Marie Johansen steers the look of them. Five years ago this aesthetic could only be assembled out of other people’s clothes at resale prices. Some of it is now on retail shelves.

Where It Tips Into Costume

Too many loud pieces at once. One item carries the outfit and the rest stay quiet. A cropped jacket over a mesh top over flared leather with a harness and a chain is five ideas competing for one body.

Buying it all new is the second. This look reads as worn. Five matching shades of factory black look like a uniform. Buy the leather used, and treat the drift in your blacks as something to manage.

After that, costume-shop versions of the hard elements. Fangs, contact lenses and full face paint were a period on Carti’s own timeline. On anyone else they read as dressing up as him.

Last, logos. Fūga counts visible branding at zero, and this is the one rule every source keeps. Shape is what identifies these clothes.

They Do Not Dress the Same

Carti is the compression. Chrome Hearts made him custom pieces, he runs his own label under YVL, and his stylist Burberry Erry did as much to set this as any designer did. What he wears is the maximal reading: the volume play at its most extreme, the metal loudest, and whatever the current album era says. His is also the costliest to approximate, since a lot of what he has on does not retail.

Destroy Lonely is the opposite end and the more copyable one. He calls his own thing glunge, grunge crossed with designer, and Grazia picks out tight trousers as the signature, in leather or denim or plain leggings. The narrow-leg reading, built out of ordinary shapes in good materials.

Ken Carson and Homixide Gang sit between the two. Watch all four and the constant parts come out: black, metal, and the contrast between a fitted thing and an enormous one. What moves around is the leg width, the exact palette and how much hardware is on. That is where the four write-ups fall out.

Pick one of the four and build toward him.

Putting It Together

Wide. A fitted black long-sleeve or ribbed tank, an outer layer two or three sizes up, and something heavy and wide from the hip down that stacks over the shoe. One silver chain. This is the version Fūga and Techwear Storm both describe, and it is the more forgiving of the two, because volume hides a lot.

Narrow. The same fitted base, the same enormous outer layer, and a narrow leg in leather or coated denim that ends clean at the ankle with no stack at all. Closer to what Grazia describes on Destroy Lonely, and to the Hedi Slimane line the whole thing came from. It asks more of you: nothing about a narrow leg is forgiving, and the shoe has to carry the bottom of the outfit on its own.

The one that dodges it. Fitted top, huge outer layer, and mid-weight straight trousers that are neither. All the volume sits above the waist, the chain does the metal, and the leg stays out of the argument. Least interesting of the three, and the likeliest to still look right next year, since the top half is the part all four agree on.

In all three the base layer is the cheapest thing you own and the outer layer is the loudest.

The costs come out lopsided, too. The base is a black long-sleeve at fifteen to thirty pounds and it does not matter where it comes from as long as it matches the other blacks. The outer layer is where a hundred to two hundred goes, and it is the piece worth waiting for. Trousers land between forty and a hundred depending on how wide and how heavy. One sterling chain runs thirty to fifty, and sunglasses in real acetate start around sixty.

A complete first version lands between a hundred and eighty and three hundred and fifty pounds. Assembled over months, not in one order, with the leather bought later and used.

Three Complete Looks

The leather one. A studded moto over a plain dark top, pleated leather trousers stacking onto the shoe, heavy boots, one chain. This is the Hedi Slimane line the whole thing came out of, and it is the version Grazia describes on Destroy Lonely. The trousers do the work here: they are narrow to the knee and then break long over the boot, which is the only way a narrow leg gets any weight at the bottom.

Four pieces, $273.82

The heavy one. An oversized hooded jacket, wide black cargos, the same boots, sunglasses kept on. This is the wide reading, the one Fūga and Techwear Storm both describe, and it is the more forgiving of the two because volume covers a lot. Keep the top half fitted under the jacket or the whole thing turns into fabric with a person somewhere inside it.

Four pieces, $332.95

The cheap one. A dark long-sleeve, the same pleated leather trousers, a chain, sunglasses. No outer layer at all, which is what makes it work in summer and what makes it the least forgiving of the three: with nothing over the top, the fit of the long-sleeve is the entire silhouette. Buy that piece properly and this is the version most people should start with.

Where to Buy It

Start with the labels that build this wardrobe directly, because that is where most of it comes from. Supermade carries the whole spine of it in one place. Cropped leather bombers and studded leather jackets, flared and bootcut trousers, distressed waxed leggings, ribbed tanks, dual-strap boots, knit balaclavas, and the chain hardware to go over them. SNKRDUNK points at NO/FAITH STUDIOS, PROJECT G/R, PERSONSOUL and Thug Club in the same tier. Hunting the originals instead is what turns a month’s work into two years’.

Above that sit the originals: Rick Owens, Chrome Hearts, Margiela, Balenciaga and Vetements, plus Carti’s own YVL. These set the vocabulary and they price accordingly. Opium’s own retail collaborations belong here too now, with Pelle Pelle, Mitchell and Ness, and Under Armour.

Resale comes last, and it is where the leather and the silver make sense. Qwintry names YOOX, PRM and eBay. A ten-year-old full-grain jacket has already done the part where leather stiffens and settles.

Buy It in This Order

1. TrousersTrousers first. They are the biggest change per pound, and that much is agreed on even where the shape is not. Pick the shape off whoever you are copying, because the four write-ups will not settle it for you.
2. The outer layerThen one enormous outer layer, because the volume play needs two sizes to play with and you probably already own the fitted half.
3. The silverThen the silver, at thirty to fifty pounds, and here buy once. A single 925 chain outlasts a drawer of plated ones.
4. Black basicsBlack basics last, and the ones that go together should come from one place.
5. LeatherLeather comes after all of that, and used.

Rick Owens and Chrome Hearts sit at the top of all this and the silhouette works without either of them. Silver is the exception, and what you are paying for there is the metal.
