Sleeve Print and Chest Print

Hold the shirt up and look at the arms. Sleeve print comes in two kinds, and a third shirt has none at all.

Type down both arms. A line of type runs vertically down each sleeve, from the shoulder to the cuff. The person beside you gets as much of the shirt as the person in front.

A flame down each sleeve. The shape narrows as it goes down the arm and finishes at the cuff.

All of it on the chest. The whole picture sits on the front, sometimes a single panel filling most of the chest, and both arms are left plain.

Think of a chest print as a poster: you have to be standing in front of it for it to do anything at all.

Kurt Cobain's Striped Long Sleeve

Look up the press photographs from the tenth MTV Video Music Awards, on 2 September 1993, where Nirvana collected the Moonman for Best Alternative Video. Cobain is in a long-sleeve shirt banded in narrow black and white, with the banding carrying the full length of it and down both arms. Below the waist, one flat mid-blue.

A stripe repeats. A pushed-up sleeve, a creased shoulder, a sleeve cut off at the elbow: it still reads as a stripe through all of them. A graphic has a beginning and an end, so you have to leave the sleeve where it came: down, uncreased, full length.

Cobain got the coverage of both arms for free. With a printed tee there is work to do first. Put the graphic where you can see it. Keep the fold clear of it. Give it a plain field to sit against. Those flat mid-blue jeans are the third one, and that part you can copy straight off the photograph.

What Goes Over a Sleeve Print

Print down the sleeve narrows the choice to two: something that stops at the shoulder, or something you leave hanging open.

A knit vest. The torso goes thick. Across the shoulder it draws one clean flat line. Nothing crosses the upper arm, so a sleeve column runs from the shoulder down without a strap or a seam over it. From across a room it reads as two layers doing separate jobs, the wool holding the middle and the print running out along the arms.

An open flannel or work jacket. This covers the outer edge of each arm and leaves a narrow strip of the sleeve print showing down the front of the bicep, which reads like a stripe from a distance.

Anything at all, on a chest print. A bomber, a puffer, a hoodie, a crew-neck sweater. You get the print back when the room warms up.

Fabric Weight

The number that separates two long-sleeve tees is the fabric weight, and the blank manufacturers publish it even when the shops selling the finished shirt do not. Gildan's 2400 runs 6.0 oz per square yard. The Bella+Canvas 3501 runs 4.2. That is a 43 percent difference in cloth, or about 203 grams per square meter against 142.

You can feel where that lands. Six ounces hangs off the shoulder in a straight drop, boxy with nothing under it. Drop to four and the cloth starts taking the shape of whatever is beneath. Hold either up to a window to see how much light gets through.

Weight also decides how the ink behaves. A big blocky graphic wants the heavier cloth under it. The surface stays flat, so the edges print square. On four ounces the same graphic becomes the stiffest patch on a shirt that is otherwise moving.

Where the Print Lands on You

The factory prints the sleeve once, to one set of measurements.

On a dropped-shoulder cut the print lands lower on you than it did on the model. The first letter of a sleeve column arrives somewhere around your bicep, and reads perfectly well from there. Carry the bag on the other shoulder, since the strap lands exactly where the column starts. From there, raise your arm and drop it, and watch where the sleeve folds. Lettering that lands in that fold spends the day folded into it. Check whether the column starts above it or below it before you buy.

Long arms are better served by a flame or some other shape. It reads whole wherever it happens to stop. Lettering works better on arms nearer the middle of the range, where the column runs the full distance to the cuff.

Cropped Shirts Need a High Waist

That one set of measurements sets the hem too. A cropped long-sleeve tee finishes at or just above the waistband. That puts the bottom edge of the print higher up your body than a standard tee would.

Pair it with a high waistband. The two hems meet and the print finishes on fabric. The whole front becomes one panel.

That same waistband settles a raw hem. Look closely at one and the cut edge shows, with a line of stitching running across an inch above it. The fraying climbs to that line over the first few washes and holds there. The shirt is arriving at the length it was built to reach.

Short in the torso, go for the standard length and leave it untucked.

Jeans, Shoes and a Hat

Name three colors before you pick anything: the ground the shirt is printed on, and the two loudest colors in the print itself.

The bottom half takes the ground color, or a neutral from outside the print. A black tee with a white and red graphic goes with black jeans, or with a plain mid-blue. Either one keeps the red up at chest height and nowhere else.

How far you can stray from that depends on how much of the shirt the print covers. One that spans shoulder to shoulder holds the whole upper half. Keep the pants plain under it. A small left-chest logo holds a few square inches, which leaves the lower half free for a check or a stripe.

Shoes follow the pants. Those two are a few inches apart on you, and the shirt is up at the other end.

Then stop, apart from one thing. A hat sits far enough from the print that the two land in separate frames, so it can take a color from the graphic without crowding it.

Skirts and Shorts

Keep those same two colors off a skirt as well. A dark denim or leather one at the knee. Tights or bare legs. Front tuck, back loose.

With shorts, keep the sleeves down. People wear covered wrists against bare legs on purpose.

Washing a Printed Shirt

How long any of this lasts comes down to the care line. Look for stones. Rhinestones and beading mean the sink, almost every time. A plain printed one goes in the machine. You can sort by it from the photographs, before you open a care tab at all.

Then catch the washed and distressed prints. That shirt arrived cracked and faded on purpose, and a hot wash takes the print further along a road it has already traveled.

Saturday Afternoon

A chest-print shirt on a Saturday afternoon, worn on its own over straight-leg jeans in a soft mid-blue with no rips at the knee. That cut runs one clean vertical line from waist to shoe. In a shop mirror the whole lower half reads as one piece, with the print up against it. Put a white leather sneaker on the feet. A canvas skate shoe stays just as quiet down there, as long as the sole is low and thin. Then stop at one piece of jewelry, a ring or a chain. A watch counts as the second. The picture on your chest already fills the third slot. Leave the cuffs down at the wrist where they came.

At a Festival

Swap to the sleeve-print kind and the same outfit changes at the arms.

Leave them uncovered. Underneath, wide-leg cargo jeans and a chunky sneaker give the top half room to move. The heavy sole answers the volume of the trouser, and the silhouette widens from the shoulder all the way down. Across a crowd the sleeve prints carry, two bright vertical strokes riding on the arms as they move. A crossbody keeps that going, with one diagonal band under the strap and the rest of both sleeves in the open. A backpack puts webbing across both upper arms.

Check the cuff before you buy. A generous one that reaches the base of the thumb keeps the print running to the very end of the arm.
