What Is a Long Sleeve T-Shirt? | TheSuperMade Clothing / Long Sleeve Tees What Is a Long Sleeve T-Shirt? TheSuperMadeFabric & Fit A long sleeve T-shirt is a collarless pullover made from knitted fabric, with sleeves that extend to the wrists. Cotton jersey is a common material. A basic version has a round neckline and a hem that falls around the hips, with enough stretch in the fabric and neck opening to pull it over the head. It can be worn directly against the skin, on its own or underneath another top. “Long sleeve tee” refers to the same garment; shops also use “L/S” and “longsleeve.” The sleeve length and body length are separate measurements. A cropped long sleeve tee can end at the waist and cover the arms to the wrists. A longline tee has an extended body, often reaching farther down the hips, and may have short or long sleeves. Three-quarter sleeves finish on the forearm between the elbow and wrist. The body of a long sleeve T-shirt can also be fitted, straight, or oversized. The body usually finishes with a folded hem. Sleeve openings can have simple hems or separate ribbed cuffs. Sweatshirt A casual pullover commonly made from French terry or sweatshirt fleece. The reverse may have exposed loops or a raised, brushed surface. Ribbed waistbands and wrist cuffs are frequent features. Thermal top A garment intended to provide warmth, often as the layer worn next to the skin. Traditional waffle-like thermal knits have a cellular surface. Thermal base layers also come in other fabric constructions. Henley A collarless top with a short button opening beneath the neckline. Long sleeve versions can use jersey or waffle knit. The opening usually reaches partway down the upper chest. Long sleeve polo A knitted shirt with a collar and usually a short button opening. Piqué fabric, with its small textured cells, is common. Some polos use smooth jersey. Long sleeve shirt A broad name covering tees, polos, and woven shirts. A woven button-front shirt often has a folded collar, a shoulder yoke, and buttoned cuffs. Sweater A knitwear garment often made from individually knitted panels. Visible ribbing, cable patterns, and shaped knitting around the armholes can help identify it. Fine-gauge sweaters can be lightweight. A waffle-knit Henley can appear in both Henley and thermal categories: its neckline has buttons, and its textured fabric is used for warmth. A jersey tee with an attached hood may be sold as a hooded T-shirt. What Long Sleeve T-Shirts Are Made Of Full-length sleeves and a straight body hem. TheSuperMade. Small columns of stitches run down the face of a single-jersey T-shirt. Turning back a sleeve exposes a different loop pattern on the inside. The same fabric usually continues through the sleeves and the broad panels across the chest and back. These interlocking yarn loops give a knit room to stretch as they change shape. Cotton jersey can therefore stretch even when its fiber label reads 100% cotton. Around the neck opening, a narrow strip of rib knit expands as the shirt is pulled over the head. Ribbed cuffs gather the sleeve ends at the wrists. These separate bands account for descriptions such as “jersey tee with ribbed trims.” On an all-over ribbed tee, the ridges continue through the body and sleeves, opening sideways as the fabric stretches across the torso. Rib is used for close-fitting tops as well as trims. Interlock has a smooth appearance on both sides and a more stable structure; it is another fabric used for soft knitted tops. The composition label names the fibers used to make those stitches. Cotton absorbs moisture, including perspiration. Elastane, also called spandex, supplies elastic stretch and recovery. In a label reading “95% cotton, 5% elastane,” that small elastic component helps the fabric return toward its original shape after being stretched. Composition can vary between colors of the same style: AS Colour lists its Staple Long Sleeve Tee in 100% cotton, with 15% viscose in the heather versions. The main fabric and the neckline or cuffs can also have separate compositions. For a tee worn on its own, the way the fabric hangs is visible across the chest and below the arms. Soft, fine jersey can fall into small folds and follow the torso closely. A firm jersey can hold broad sleeves and a boxy body farther away from the skin. Yarn, knit density, and finishing affect this drape. With a pale fitted tee, check the fabric across the chest at its intended wearing stretch to judge how much of an underlayer shows through. Common Long Sleeve T-Shirt Styles Striped sleeves beneath the ribbed graphic body. TheSuperMade. On a plain crew-neck long sleeve, the rounded neck opening sits near the base of the neck. A scoop neck opens farther down the chest; a V-neck forms an angled opening at the front. A boat neck extends toward the shoulders. These openings can appear on both fitted and loose bodies. The crew neck remains visible above the open collar of an overshirt, and a necklace can rest against the fabric. Baseball-style tees often use differently colored sleeves joined to the body along diagonal raglan seams. Each sleeve continues across the shoulder to the neckline. Baseball tees are sold with full-length and three-quarter sleeves. On a tee with set-in sleeves, a curved joining seam follows the armhole near the shoulder. A dropped shoulder places that join farther down the upper arm. Graphics can occupy the chest, run along one sleeve, or extend across the back. A print down the sleeve remains visible beneath a short sleeve tee worn over it. TheSuperMade's Cartoon Graffiti Graphic Striped Layered Long Sleeve Tee has a ribbed graphic body, with striped sections extending below the short outer sleeves. Striped fabric also shows at the neckline. The layered appearance is built into one garment. How Much Warmth to Expect A fine cotton long sleeve can be worn on its own indoors and under an overshirt on a cool morning. It adds fabric coverage along the forearms, an area left exposed by short sleeves. For longer periods outdoors in cold weather, a lined or padded jacket adds insulation around the body and arms. The warmth of the T-shirt itself depends on its thickness and the air held within the knit structure. Brushed sweatshirt fabric has raised fibers on the inside that help hold insulating air. Weight descriptions vary between brands. AS Colour describes its Staple Long Sleeve Tee as mid weight at 5.3 oz per square yard. Gildan's Heavy Cotton 5400 long sleeve has the same published fabric weight. Each works out to approximately 180 GSM. The word “heavy” on the Gildan product belongs to its range name. There is overlap between garment categories, too. AS Colour's Heavy Long Sleeve Tee uses 8.2 oz fabric, approximately 278 GSM. Fruit of the Loom's Lightweight Raglan Sweat uses 240 GSM unbrushed fleece. In this pair, the T-shirt fabric weighs more per unit area than the sweatshirt fabric. Both garments have ribbed wrist cuffs. The fleece construction and ribbed waistband help identify the sweatshirt. GSM means grams per square meter: one square meter of 200 GSM fabric weighs 200 grams. This measures fabric mass per area. The weight of a finished tee also depends on how much fabric its size and cut require. Insulation depends partly on the air held within the fabric, so these published weights alone cannot establish which of the two garments feels warmer in use. For layering under a fitted jacket, the combined thickness of the tee and jacket sleeves affects how freely the elbows bend. A heavyweight jersey tee with room through the chest can be worn as the outer top over a thin tank. Long sleeves also appear in clothing designed for active use in warm conditions. Patagonia’s Long-Sleeved Capilene Cool Daily Shirt uses 3.7 oz polyester jersey, approximately 125 GSM, with a wicking finish and quick-drying performance. Wicking moves liquid through a fabric so it can spread and evaporate. Cotton can also receive moisture-management treatments. In one such treatment, water-repellent yarns are combined with absorbent cotton yarns to create paths for moisture movement. Finding the Fit You Want A size chart may show the wearer's body measurements or the measurements of the finished garment. A 100 cm body-chest measurement describes the person the size is intended to fit. A 56 cm flat chest width describes the shirt laid on a surface. The chart's diagram or measurement notes establish which system is being used. Lay a tee you like flat and measure across its chest, using the points shown in the garment chart you are checking. Doubling that flat width gives an approximate chest circumference. A 56 cm shirt width works out to about 112 cm around; on a person with a 100 cm chest, that leaves roughly 12 cm of room. Stretchy fitted tees may sit closely against the body, so their size recommendations also account for the fabric stretching during wear. The next measurement, body length, can change the choice of style as well as size. AS Colour publishes these dimensions in its Staple 5020 size guide and Heavy 5081 size guide: Style and size Flat body width Body length Staple 5020, M 20.5 in / 52.1 cm 29.5 in / 74.9 cm Staple 5020, L 22.25 in / 56.5 cm 31 in / 78.7 cm Heavy 5081, M 22 in / 55.9 cm 29 in / 73.7 cm These are the brand's published garment dimensions, with centimeters converted and rounded. Moving from Staple M to Staple L adds both width and length. Heavy M offers almost the same listed width as Staple L, with a body two inches, approximately five centimeters, shorter. A person seeking that combination of chest room and hem position has a reason to compare the two cuts. Both guides say measurements can vary within one inch. The quarter-inch listed width difference between Staple L and Heavy M is smaller than that stated variation. Treat the figures as a guide to the intended proportions, then check the actual garment. For body length, match the chart's starting point, commonly the shoulder beside the neck, when measuring your reference tee. Dropped shoulders and extra sleeve length at the wrists. TheSuperMade. Those two size guides provide body width and length; sleeve length requires a separate check. On a dropped-shoulder tee, a measurement beginning at the sleeve join excludes the shoulder fabric already covering part of the arm. A measurement from the center back of the neck includes that distance. Compare sleeve lengths taken from the same starting point, following the path shown in each chart. For raglan sleeves, which run up to the neckline, use the brand's specified measurement path. During a fitting, let the arms hang naturally and look at the sleeve ends. A conventional full-length sleeve reaches around the wrist. A ribbed cuff can hold extra fabric in folds above it; a simple hemmed opening falls freely around the wrist. Bend the elbows to check how far the openings travel up the forearms, then reach forward to feel the room across the upper back. For a cropped tee, sit down in the trousers you plan to wear with it and check where the hem lands against the waistband. Wearing a Long Sleeve Tee Wear the slightly cropped, striped-sleeve graphic tee described above untucked over mid-rise, washed-blue baggy jeans, with a dark brown leather belt at the waistband. The jean hems can touch the tops of burgundy canvas sneakers worn with off-white crew socks. The shorter body leaves the upper part of the jeans visible. With a higher trouser rise, the waistband sits farther underneath the tee; a lower rise exposes more of the area below its hem. For an outfit built from two separate tees, pull a roomy navy short sleeve graphic tee over a white long sleeve. The outer tee needs enough room through its chest and armholes to accommodate the white fabric underneath. Smooth the base sleeves along the forearms before pulling the outer tee into place. A narrow strip of the white hem can show below the navy one. Add black carpenter pants and gray skate shoes with white crew socks. Under a dark indigo denim jacket, tuck an ecru crew-neck tee into olive straight-leg pants. Check the sleeves with the jacket cuffs fastened and both elbows bent. A close or regular fit through the upper arms usually leaves room for the denim sleeves to move. Wear the jacket open with a brown leather belt showing at the waist, and add brown suede lace-up shoes with brown socks. A fitted black ribbed long sleeve can also sit above a high-waisted denim midi skirt. Tuck its hem into the waistband and wear black ankle boots with socks covered by the boot shafts. A skirt with a walking slit gives the knees room to move. Carry a small black shoulder bag. Washing a Long Sleeve T-Shirt The striped layered tee used above specifies cold hand washing and flat drying. The care label on an individual shirt gives the instructions for its finished fabric and decoration. This includes the permitted washing temperature and drying method, plus any treatment needed for a print or attached trim. During laundering, cotton knits can change dimensions as the fabric relaxes. The amount of movement depends on the yarn and knit construction, along with finishing processes used during production. Preshrinking carries out part of that relaxation before the garment reaches the wearer. A preshrunk tee can undergo further dimensional change during washing and drying. For a tee whose sleeve or body length is already close to your preferred limit, record its flat chest width, body length, and sleeve length before the first wash. Note where each measurement starts, along with the washing temperature and drying method you use. After washing a tee labeled for flat drying, spread it across a clean towel or flat drying rack. Ease the shoulder and side seams into their natural positions, then lay each sleeve along the drying surface. Gently return the cuffs to their usual width and leave the shirt supported across its full length as it dries. Once fully dry, measure it again on the same surface with the fabric resting naturally. Fold the sleeves inward along the body before folding the lower hem up for storage. As an illustrative calculation, a body length changing from 70 cm to 68.6 cm is a 1.4 cm reduction, or 2% of the starting length. That percentage describes the example's body length. Calculate the change in chest width and sleeve length separately, since each measurement can change by a different amount.
