Which Styles the Term Covers

Punk arrived in 1976, in London and New York within months of each other. Tartan, bondage trousers with straps buckled between the legs, safety pins through cloth and through skin, and shirts carrying an argument across the chest. Goth formed out of British post-punk between 1979 and 1982, around Bauhaus, the Sisters of Mercy and later Fields of the Nephilim. The word was a reviewer's for several years before the people it described picked it up. Black, velvet and lace, silver at the throat and on the hands, a pale face worked as deliberately as the clothes.

Grunge came out of Seattle and Olympia through the 1980s, and its garment is the flannel shirt worn open over a tee. The sources split on whether to date the scene to the middle of the decade or the end.

Emo started around 1985 in the Washington hardcore scene, with Rites of Spring and Embrace on the bill. The clothes now attached to the name arrived twenty years later, through the 2000s: narrow jeans, a tight band tee, a studded belt.

Industrial and cyber followed the electronic scenes and brought coated fabric with them, PVC and vinyl, along with goggles, respirators and hardware borrowed from work sites.

The rivethead took the industrial end of it and dressed for a factory floor that had already closed.

Deathrock, older than most of the goth branches, is the American line out of punk and horror film, with Christian Death releasing Only Theatre of Pain in 1982. Psychobilly crossed rockabilly with punk and kept the quiff. Heavy metal shares the black, the boots and the long hair, and argues about whether it belongs here at all.

Scene split off from emo in the early 2000s. It kept the layered tees and the fringe and put bright colour through everything. It grew up on message boards and profile pages, with no single city under it.

A wardrobe can hold flannel, a studded belt and a velvet skirt at once.

The Base Garments and What Gets Added

A black tee, a denim jacket, trousers, a boot, a hooded sweatshirt. Every one of them is sold outside these scenes as well. Five operations turn them into the ones under discussion: printing, cutting, studding, patching and coating.

The boot belongs to all of the scenes at once. Dr. Martens put the 1460 into production in Northamptonshire on 1 April 1960 and sold it to postmen, factory workers and police, with the model number taken from the date. Skinheads took it up at the end of that decade, punks in the seventies, goths in the eighties, grunge after them. Six decades and four scenes later it is still the same eight-eyelet work boot with yellow stitching round the sole.

The rest of the base list came the same way. Denim was workwear and the hooded sweatshirt came off American sports kit. The plain tee was US army underwear before Marlon Brando wore one on screen in 1951 and pushed it out on its own, and the world now makes over seven billion of them a year.

Printing puts the band, the slogan or the symbol on the chest. A band name names the rooms a person goes to, and it is the one item in these wardrobes that states a specific allegiance. The Westwood and McLaren shirts of 1976 were screen-printed with material designed to get the wearer stopped in the street, and the same surface now carries a licensing industry.

Cutting opens the cloth. Studding, patching and coating add material that was not there when the garment left the mill.

Coating built a whole scene on its own. Industrial and cyber wardrobes run on cloth with a polymer face, and that shine sets them apart from punk, goth, grunge and emo.

Studding and patching each come in a version done by hand and a version done at volume. A stud set through the cloth leaves its mark on the inside of the garment. One stuck to the surface leaves the inside clean. A patch sewn by hand takes an evening; a heat press does it in four seconds. People were pinning their own shirts in the same months.

Hair, Piercings and Makeup

Hair carries as much of this as the clothes do, and it comes down to four operations. Cutting comes first. The sides come off, the mohawk and the liberty spike both start there, and the deathhawk borrows the same shave; the name belongs to the Mohawk nation of the Haudenosaunee confederacy, and the punk version dates from the 1970s. Height follows, and it takes product and half an hour before leaving the house. Colour goes on in shades no hair grows in, or black, or two contrasting stripes through the layers. Covering the face came last, and emo is carried more by a fringe cut flat across one eye than by any garment on the list.

Grunge skipped the cut, the height, the colour and the fringe alike.

Piercings arrived with punk in the same decade and stayed. Studies of body modification treat them as the clearest single marker of membership across emo, punk and the scenes between, and the 1980s scholarship on punk style says the same. Goth absorbed them into a whole, matching black or silver jewellery to the rest of the face.

Tattoos and piercings took roughly twenty years to become ordinary adornment, from the early 1980s to the late 1990s. Alicia Silverstone getting a navel piercing in Aerosmith's Cryin' video in 1993 did more for that than any shop. Makeup belongs here too, worn by men in these scenes at a rate the mainstream did not reach for another thirty years.

Outfits Documented Head to Toe

London in 1976, New York in 1993, an American mall around 2006 and Tokyo across the same decades are all documented closely enough to describe from the feet up.

London, 1976. The Victoria and Albert Museum holds the bondage suit Vivienne Westwood and Malcolm McLaren made for that spring and summer, given by the designers and catalogued piece by piece: black cotton, metal zips, a detachable towelling flap at the back, two straps buckled between the legs, snap fastenings, D-rings and spring links. Above it went a shirt printed to be read across a street. Below it went a boot that had been sold to postmen since 1960. The hair was cut short at the sides and stood up, in a colour no hair grows in. All of it was on sale at 430 King's Road, and the museum lists the materials as machine-sewn cotton and metal.

New York, 1993. Kurt Cobain played MTV Unplugged on 18 November in an olive green cardigan over a white tee and loose jeans, with Converse below. The cardigan went to auction in 2019, described in the same part-by-part way: size medium, acrylic and mohair and Lycra, five buttons with one missing, two outside pockets, a burn hole and staining near the left one. It had been bought second hand. It sold for 334,000 dollars.

A suburban mall, around 2006. Black skinny jeans, a band tee bought at the counter, a studded belt, Converse or slip-ons, a hooded top, a long fringe flat across one eye, heavy liner. Every item on that list was available in one shop, on one floor, on one afternoon. Neither of the first two outfits could be ordered that way; this one could be, and was, several hundred thousand times over. That version is the one the word now brings up first.

Tokyo, the same decades. Visual kei put full makeup and sculpted hair on men, with corsets, layered skirts and stage costume cut for a venue. The imports were the same as London's, and Tokyo built something else out of them. Across the four, the shared items come to a boot, a printed chest, dark colour and cut or dyed hair.

Class, and Who the Research Left Out

The Birmingham Centre for Contemporary Cultural Studies published Resistance Through Rituals in 1976, treating skinheads, mods and later punk as collective responses by post-war working-class youth to their own position. Dick Hebdige's Subculture followed in 1979 and became the most cited book on the subject.

That framing carries a geographic problem its own successors have named. Punk in Stockport or South Shields ran on different money from punk on the King's Road, where the shop at number 430 sold the look at forty-odd pounds a garment. For the young people in those towns punk answered the conditions they lived in. For the shop on the King's Road it was a business. The histories tend to be written from the second position.

The other gap was named inside the same volume. McRobbie and Garber pointed out in 1976 that girls and young women were close to invisible in the research, appearing at most in supporting roles, and later work confirmed the omission. Women were in these rooms from the beginning. Siouxsie Sioux fixed a face that a generation copied, Vivienne Westwood cut the clothes that fixed the silhouette, and Poly Styrene fronted a band that argued with the whole enterprise. The researchers were mostly men, and the people they wrote down were mostly men.

The Music It Came From

R.E.M. put out a first single on Hib-Tone in July 1981). Hüsker Dü and the Minutemen recorded for SST, the Replacements for Twin/Tone in Minneapolis, and none of them had a major label behind the record. College radio carried it instead, along with whatever room the band could book. Alternative named that route.

Before it settled, the same music went under other names. American writers called it college rock, after the stations carrying it. British writers said indie, after the labels. Both terms describe a business arrangement. Billboard opened an Alternative chart in 1988, and by 1990 the single word had taken over from the other two.

Once those records sold in quantity the word stopped describing anything about distribution. The clothes kept it.

The clothes had arrived a decade before the label, and they arrived with a price list. Safety pins and torn shirts belong to the same period and were done at home, and the two things ran alongside each other from the first year.

When It Became Something You Could Buy in a Mall

Hot Topic opened its first shop in November 1989, at Montclair Plaza in California. It sold band shirts, posters and costume jewellery to people who had been buying that material by mail or at gigs. Bauhaus and the Cure were among the first names on the racks.

From 1989 a teenager in a suburb could walk into a shopping centre on a Saturday afternoon and buy the whole look off the rack.

The argument about whether that counts has run ever since, and the 1976 shop was already inside it. Later the same function moved online, and the labels that took it over sell to a customer who never walks into a mall.

Why These Scenes Sit Under One Word

Within two years of 1976 punk was being sold back to its own audience, and the musicians who found that unbearable went in several directions at once.

One direction became post-punk, from 1977, slower and stranger and built on studio work. Gothic rock came out of that within two years. Nick Kent used the adjective on Siouxsie and the Banshees in July 1978, Bauhaus put out a first single in 1979, and the people it described spent three or four more years refusing the word before they took it up.

A second direction was hardcore, faster and shorter. Emo came out of the Washington end of it around 1985, when Rites of Spring and Embrace put confessional lyrics over the same speed, and the hardcore rooms did not thank them for it.

A third scene grew up in the Pacific Northwest through the 1980s and listed punk among its debts without sounding much like it. Grunge reached the rest of the world in 1991 and took the word alternative into the charts with it.

Industrial belongs to the group by adoption. Throbbing Gristle formed in Hull in 1975, played the ICA in October 1976 at an exhibition that reached Parliament, and set up Industrial Records the same year to put out their own work. Skinny Puppy and Front 242 carried the sound into clubs where goths were already dancing.

The Scenes Outside Britain and America

All of that happened in Britain and America, and the term is used in far more countries than two.

Japan built its own version on the same imports and finished somewhere else entirely. Visual kei started in the early 1980s among bands who took glam rock and punk from the West and put kabuki and noh staging through them. The name came out of an X Japan album slogan, and the magazine SHOXX picked it up as a category in 1992. Its clothes run to corsets, layered skirts, sculpted hair and full makeup on men. It sits beside goth on the dark palette and nowhere else.

How the Shops Describe These Clothes

Three shops selling into this territory publish their whole stock in the open. Dolls Kill lists about 3,750 pieces, Supermade about 1,764, Killstar about 674. Reading the most recent 250 names from each on 11 August 2026, past the seasonal costume racks, gives 601 products to look at.

Seven of those 601 names contain goth, gothic, punk, emo, grunge, cyber or alt. The other 594 are sold as a dress, a tee, a corset or a boot, with a length or a print attached and black as the commonest colourway. All of these styles of clothes can be found in the search box.

E-girl and What Came After

E-girl came out of the late 2010s and peaked on TikTok in 2020: winged liner, blush across the bridge of the nose, small hearts drawn under the eye, striped long sleeves under a band tee, pleated skirts. The wardrobe was assembled out of mid-2000s emo and scene plus nineties grunge, with anime accessories on top.

During the pandemic that mixture hardened into what the archives now file as 2020 Alt, a collage of mallgoth, scene and e-girl worn largely indoors and photographed for a feed. Its participants swapped the gendered e-girl and e-boy labels for alt kid. It faded by 2023, overtaken by the Y2K revival, and a revival attempt in January 2025 collapsed inside a month.

Coquette and whimsigoth ran alongside, pulling the palette toward lace, pastel and thrifted velvet.

Who Wears It Now

The clothes used to be how a room recognised you, and you had to be in the room. Ross Haenfler's teaching site on digital subcultures puts the change plainly: taking part remotely is now possible, and turning up in person has moved from mandatory to optional.

The #altfashion tag on TikTok had passed 1.8 billion views by 2023. A community called Alt TikTok formed on the platform in 2020, largely queer, and it defined itself against the platform's default recommendations.

Some scenes decline the word altogether. They read alternative as a shop's word for six different histories, and would rather be called by their own scene's name.

Two populations now sit inside the word: people who found the clothes in a club or a record shop, and people who found them in a feed.

What the Arguments Are Actually About

Where the clothes came from was already a fight in punk's first year, and Hot Topic reopened it in 1989 on a national scale.

A second fight runs underneath it, over how much you have to know. The questions are usually about records. Punk called the person who failed a poseur. American goths of the late nineties said mall goth, a term that started as an insult for dressing the part without the music. The word keeps changing.

A newer argument points the opposite way and holds that appearance settles it. A trend surfaced in the middle 2020s holding that pale skin, dark circles or unruly hair make a person alternative on their own, with no scene attached. The scenes described here point the other way. Each was assembled out of choices about what to buy, what to alter and what to listen to.

None of the three fights settles whether a person with the whole wardrobe is in or out.
