The Straps Go on the Outside

None of that list is arbitrary. Each item is placed where it is because it quotes a character who needed it there.

The science fiction critic Lawrence Person, in the 1998 essay that named postcyberpunk, described the classic characters as marginalized, alienated loners who lived on the edge of society. William Gibson, whose 1984 novel Neuromancer set the genre's terms, put it that the street finds its own uses for things. Those people had no employer holding their things and no address to go back to, so they carried everything.

That is the picture the clothes are copying, and it explains the placements.

Straps sit outside because on the character they held gear he had to reach without stopping. On a jacket in a shop they hold nothing, which is why a decorative strap and a working one look the same.

The mask is at the face because the character distrusted the air and the cameras.

Reflective trim is on the body because his street was dark and full of traffic.

The shell runs long because his coat was also his shelter. A coat someone could sleep in is a different object from one worn between two heated rooms.

Read it as a quotation rather than as equipment and the boundaries fall out. Goth quotes an interior, punk quotes being refused entry, techwear answers actual weather, and this quotes a night with no fixed end.

What Makes Something Cyberpunk

The list is short. A coat or shell long enough to move when you walk. A harness, chest rig or strap system over it. Cargo or technical trousers with the volume pulled in at the ankle. Boots with a visible sole unit. A mask, a respirator shape, or wraparound tinted lenses. Reflective trim somewhere on the body.

Two questions settle whether a garment is inside.

First, look at whether the hardware shows. A hidden zip and a clean placket put a coat in another category whatever it's made of. Buckles, webbing, cord locks, exposed teeth and D-rings are the entry condition.

Second, put it under a beam of light and see whether it still reads. This wardrobe was drawn for a street lit from the side and from above, and the parts that carry it are the parts that catch a beam.

Color does not come into either question. Put webbing across the chest of a plain black coat and add a reflective band at the cuff, and the same garment is inside.

How This Became a Style

Cyberpunk's people are marginalized loners on the edge of a city, and that is the posture the clothes carry.

The clothes themselves came from a run of decisions that refused to invent anything. Screen futures are usually purpose-built, cut for a film and existing nowhere before it, which makes them uncopyable. Three of the five dates that built this wardrobe went the other way, each time reaching for a garment that already existed. A garment adapted from something real stays buyable afterwards.

So the look arrived as a posture with a shopping list attached.

Summaries of Dick Hebdige's Subculture: The Meaning of Style describe exactly that operation, ordinary objects taken and given new meanings as a way of making meaning outside institutions. They also describe how it ends, with incorporation turning resistance into consumerism.

Tight on Top, Wide on the Legs

Before any detail, the outline does most of the work.

The torso is compressed. Straps, a harness or a vest pull the chest and back tight, and the layers underneath sit close to the body.

The legs are the opposite. Trousers carry volume through the thigh and then close at the ankle with a cuff, a strap, or a boot swallowing the hem. Check the hem, not the thigh. If the trouser breaks over your shoe, the ankle isn't closed and you're wearing a different silhouette.

The outer layer runs long. A shell reaching mid-thigh or past the knee gives the silhouette its vertical line and gives the walk something to move.

So the outline is tight through the chest, wide through the thigh, closed at the ankle and long at the outer layer. A plain black outfit built to those four reads correctly before a single buckle goes on.

Use More Than One Kind of Black

Black separates from black by surface. Two garments can be the same shade and still read apart, and four reflectances are enough to give an outfit an interior.

A mesh layer under a matte shell costs less than a strap and does more.

It Was Assembled Between 1982 and 1999

Five dates built the wardrobe, and each one added a different piece of it.

1982. Blade Runner. Deckard wears a long wool trench over a patterned button shirt and a tie. No hat, because Harrison Ford had just spent a film in one and refused. The director Ridley Scott's instruction to the costume department was to avoid the diagonal zipper and silver-hair syndrome. Michael Kaplan, who designed the costumes with Charles Knode and won a BAFTA for them, has said the team read the script, decided it was film noir, and looked back to the 1940s. Rachael's tailoring came from Gilbert Adrian's suits of the late thirties.

What this film gave was the coat length, the rain and the city. Scott described that city as Hong Kong on a very bad day. The street scenes are full of conical straw hats and pajamas, which a Hong Kong museum reads as Asian stereotypes sketched by 1980s Hollywood. The wrap fronts and mandarin collars that look Japanese in this wardrobe start here, on a drawing board in Los Angeles.

The black, the hardware and the reflective all arrive later.

1983. The word. Bruce Bethke's short story Cyberpunk ran in Amazing Science Fiction Stories that November, seventeen months after the film, and Neuromancer followed in 1984. None of it put a garment on anybody.

1988. Akira, and a rulebook. Kaneda wears a red leather biker jacket with a high stand collar and the capsule patch across the back, trousers cropped over the boots. Akira dressed its gang out of the Japanese motorcycle scene, from makers like Kadoya. So this jacket is a real product category, and the only outfit in this list built around a color.

The same year brought Mike Pondsmith's boxed role-playing game, whose credo was style over substance and which treated what a character wore as a mechanic. A novel describes and a film shows. A rulebook hands you a sheet and asks what you have on.

1995. Ghost in the Shell. Motoko Kusanagi wears a bodysuit under a long coat, and it is where the pair who went on to direct The Matrix found the look. The Wachowskis showed the film to the producer Joel Silver and said they wanted to do that for real.

1999. The Matrix. Floor-length coat, mandarin collar shirt, boots, custom sunglasses, everything black. The costume designer was Kym Barrett, and the coat is where most shopping goes wrong. Barrett has said it was a wool blend she got in New York for about three dollars a yard and that it did the job perfectly. Trinity's shine was cheap PVC for the same reason, a much tighter budget.

Run the four together and the assembly is visible. 1982 supplies the length and the noir. 1988 supplies an outer jacket built like real motorcycle gear, and the idea that dress is a role. 1995 carries it into a film the next set of directors watched. 1999 puts the whole thing in black and adds the lenses.

One consequence for anyone shopping. The Asian element in this wardrobe arrived twice from opposite directions, once as a Los Angeles idea of Hong Kong and once as an actual Japanese motorcycle jacket. Which is why a real Japanese technical jacket, cut clean and closed flat, doesn't read as cyberpunk. What the style quotes is the drawing, not the garment.

When People Started Actually Wearing It

A look on a screen is not a style until someone buys it, and the record of that happening is thinner than the record of the films.

The first documented pickup was fast. The Matrix opened in March 1999. Fashion coverage of the period places PVC and micro-glasses on Dior's autumn couture runway under John Galliano within months, and Janet Jackson in all leather at the MTV awards the following year. That is the top of the market, not the street.

The second is dated to the late 2010s. The same trade coverage puts the return of statement eyewear at 2017 and of utilitarian dress at 2018, alongside long leather coats at Alexander Wang in Fall 2018. The small-sunglasses revival is usually traced to Kanye West and Rihanna rather than to a designer.

The third is 2020, when Cyberpunk 2077 shipped with a published four-part wardrobe system and gave the vocabulary to a games audience.

Those three are what the trade press records, and trade press is a weaker source than a spec sheet. Take the dates as the shape of the thing rather than as a census. What they suggest is a look that has been picked up repeatedly rather than continuously, and the version now on a rail belongs to the most recent pickup.

There Are Four Versions of This

Pondsmith's roles started the idea that dress divides by what a person does. Cyberpunk 2077 in 2020 turned it into an explicit wardrobe system, and for anyone under thirty that game is the largest single source of what this looks like now. It sets out four styles.

Entropism. The poverty version, out of a crash. Function over appearance, no bright colors and no showy cybernetics, everything worn because it works.

Kitsch. The answer to Entropism. Loud, attention-seeking, color and cybernetics on display, and the whole point is to be looked at.

Neo-Militarism. The corporate one. Clean lines, dark, restrained, hardware present but tidy.

Neo-Kitsch. Kitsch with money behind it. Same palette, better made, chrome on the body.

Most outfits that look confused are two of these at once. Entropism boots under a Neo-Kitsch coat is poverty and money on the same body, and they want opposite things.

It Leaves Skin Showing

That definition of Person's runs longer than the part about loners. It puts the classic characters in a future shaped by rapid technological change, a datasphere of computerized information, and invasive modification of the human body.

That last clause is what separates this from every other wardrobe built out of black. The assumption is that the body has been worked on, and the clothes are drawn around the work.

Which is why so much of the wardrobe frames rather than covers. A sleeveless shell or a rolled cuff exists to leave a forearm visible. A harness routes around the chest rather than across it. A high collar stops at the jaw and leaves the temple clear. Every one of those is a garment making room for something.

The exposed seam, the visible zip and the strap on the outside are that same idea applied to the clothes. A garment with its construction showing sits on a body with its construction showing.

You don't need any of it to wear this. It does explain why a rolled sleeve carries more weight here than in other styles.

Let Some of It Look Used

High tech, low life is the premise of the whole genre, and the second half is the half people leave out of the outfit.

Everything on the list can be correct and the result can still read as a costume. The pieces are rarely the reason. What gives it away is that they arrived together, from one kind of shop, with nothing on the body yet used.

What fixes it is provenance. A resoled boot. A patch over a tear that was repaired instead of hidden. A strap replaced in a different color of webbing because that was what was on the shelf. One expensive shell over four cheap layers, and a bag older than all of it.

This is also where the line with cyber-grunge sits. Cyber-grunge buys the rips pre-made and treats damage as decoration, whereas the garments in this world get worn for years, mended when they fail, and kept in service long past the point where a shop would have replaced them.

The Face Gets Covered

It's there to interrupt the face. Everything else here is hardware and volume, and an uncovered face pulls attention back to a person in ordinary clothes.

Which means the mask is interchangeable with anything that does the same. Wraparound tinted lenses do it. A high collar zipped to the nose does it. A hood pulled forward with a shadow across the eyes does it.

The head above it matters just as much. What follows is observation rather than anything sourced. A close crop, shaved sides or a wrapped head keeps the silhouette continuous with the collar. Long loose hair over a rig breaks the line and is the single fastest way to make the whole thing read as fancy dress.

One more thing about masks. The fashionable shape turns over every couple of years, which makes it the item that dates a photograph fastest.

One Strap System Is Enough

There's a ceiling to this, and it's easy to go past. The next three paragraphs are my own judgment rather than anything documented.

The hardware test is satisfied once. One strap system answers it, and a second reads as luggage.

Same at the face. A mask and a full-face lens and a hood forward is three ways of interrupting one head.

Daylight is the real test. On an ordinary street at noon, reflective trim does nothing and a mask reads as a medical item. The long coat is the only part still working. The daytime version is the shape without the theater. Shell, closed ankle, boots, one strap, no face covering.

One distinction is worth keeping. An outfit that works on a lit street at night is working. An outfit that only comes alive when a flash fires is working for the camera.

How to Tell Real Gear From Fake

A decorative strap and a real one both read as cyberpunk. What follows separates them on durability instead, and each check takes about five seconds.

Two prices sit behind all four. Mil-spec webbing runs $1.60 a linear yard against $18.67 for the 500D Cordura it gets sewn to. Count the yardage on a rig front and the visible grid costs about twice the panel behind it.

The Parts Cost Cents

Reflective trim is a workwear commodity sold by the roll. Webbing and hardware sit in the middle. A laminated waterproof shell is the expensive part and always has been.

What that means at the rail is that a strap vest and a laminated shell can sit on the same rack at prices that don't reflect what went into them. The strap vest is close to its material cost. The shell is not, and the gap is the membrane and the seam tape.

So a low price buys the parts that read hardest, and a higher one goes into the parts that hold up.

Techwear Solves a Different Problem

Techwear is a performance argument, built around a membrane of the GORE-TEX type plus a seam construction and a cut that lets you move. The visual arrives as a by-product of solving those three problems, which is why labels working that way put the membrane and the construction on the product page. Cyberpunk is a visual argument, where the strap is there to be seen and the panel is there to catch a light. Ask what happens if you strip the hardware off. A techwear jacket still does its job, and this one becomes a plain black coat.

Goth and Punk Are Doing Something Else

Goth shares the black and shares nothing else, working in velvet, lace and leather off historical references, with a silhouette that hangs from the shoulder. Punk supplies the hardware vocabulary and stops there, since studs, pins and patches come from a movement about tearing things down while this one assembles and fastens. Cyber-grunge takes the same references and buys the damage pre-made, and our guide to dressing cyber-grunge covers that side.

Where to Buy It

You can tell the three kinds of seller apart by what the product page states. A technical seller gives the membrane, the laminate count and the hydrostatic head, because those numbers are what the price is for; a tactical seller gives the denier and the webbing spec, because gear that doesn't state them won't mate with anyone else's; and a fashion seller gives neither, pricing instead on how the thing looks in a photograph.

All three answer honestly. They are answering different questions, and the third is answering the one this style asks. Streetwear took the silhouette and dropped the hardware, techwear kept the materials and dropped the theater, and the outerwear, boots and pieces on this site sit in that third group.
