What Counts as Streetwear

The core inventory runs to a printed cotton tee, a hooded sweatshirt, trousers cut wide in denim, cotton duck, or nylon, flat-soled sneakers, and a cap.

The cut identifies it more than the item list does. A streetwear tee is drafted boxy, its chest measurement running close to its length, with the shoulder seam dropped onto the upper arm; a tapered office trouser and a fitted tee stay outside the category on cut alone. Trousers hold one width from thigh to hem, wide enough that the fabric stacks on the shoe. Each layer sizes up over the one below. Hoodies clear the waistband, and jackets clear the hoodie.

The Classic Fits

Some outfits define the category better than any parts list. The base fit is a printed heavyweight tee over wide trousers, flat suede shoes, and a cap. Run-DMC fixed the New York version on stage in 1986: black Godfather hats, black leather, gold rope chains, and shell-toe Superstars worn with the laces out. The 90s street uniform followed, baggy denim under a heavyweight hoodie with boots and a beanie, sized so the silhouette shows from across an avenue.

Where the Sneaker Fits

The fourth garment is the shoe. It runs flat and low, court and skate shapes in suede, leather, and canvas, made to slide under a wide hem. A whole collector's vocabulary grew up around it, enough to fill a published glossary. A sneakerhead keeps a rotation, hunts a grail, and loses releases to the automated buying software that the trade calls bots.

What the Fabric Weighs

Fabric weight is the first line on a tee's specification sheet. The industry states it in grams per square meter, GSM, or in ounces per square yard; one ounce per square yard converts to about 33.9 GSM, putting a 5.0 oz shirt near 170 GSM. A mass-retail tee runs 4.0 to 5.0 oz, roughly 135 to 170 GSM. The band from 150 to 180 GSM covers most everyday shirts. Heavyweight starts around 180, and the structured tees this category is known for come in at 240 to 255 GSM, 7 to 7.5 oz, close to double the mall shirt. More grams per square meter means more cotton in the same panel: a thicker feel in the hand, a squarer hang, a higher cost at the mill.

Shaka Wear's Max Heavyweight, a standard blank of the streetwear print trade, publishes the full recipe: 7.5 oz, 245 to 255 GSM, 100 percent cotton, shoulder-to-shoulder neck tape, a double-needle collar built to resist stretching, and one-inch double-needle hems. Neck tape is the fabric strip covering the shoulder seam inside the collar. The double-needle hem shows two parallel stitch lines at sleeve and waist.

At 250 GSM the body is opaque enough to hide a ceiling bulb held behind it. A heavy body holds its collar and shape long enough for the print to fade in, the soft washed look the category prizes.

The hoodie runs a parallel scale. Mall fleece through the 2010s came in near 250 to 280 GSM; midweight retail covers 280 to 350, and the heavyweight fleece this category favors starts around 400 GSM and tops out near 500, with 14 oz American fleece at about 475. The threshold changes how the garment behaves. Below 400 the fleece drapes on the body; above it the fabric holds a square shape on its own.

Denim gets weighed the same way in different units. The trade states it in ounces per square yard: under 12 oz counts as lightweight, 12 to 16 as midweight, past 16 as heavyweight, and the figure describes the cloth, a 14 oz pair of jeans weighing nowhere near 14 oz. Weight and cut travel together in this fabric. A mill's fit guide notes that heavyweight denim needs looser cuts, and stiff cloth sewn close restricts the knee, one more reason the category's trousers run wide. Heavier cloth also fades harder; from 14 oz up the fade potential turns serious, the high-contrast worn look behind the category's washed denim.

How the Graphic Gets Onto the Shirt

Run a thumb across the print with eyes shut. On most graphic tees the pad finds a raised edge where the ink begins. That edge is plastisol, PVC particles carried in a plasticizer and cured at 350°F into a film that rests on the fabric's surface. The film is opaque, bright on black cotton, and thick enough to hold heat over the chest.

The second family soaks in. Water-based ink dries inside the fiber; the printed panel bends like the cloth around it and fades the way old concert shirts fade.

What the Graphics Say

The choice of image is the message. A print gets picked for the announcement it makes about the person inside it: the music they claim, the joke they are in on, the standing they want assumed. Clients at Dapper Dan's Harlem atelier picked Gucci and Louis Vuitton monograms for exactly that reason. The marks meant arrival, and the houses would not sell those customers the cut they wanted.

The graphics carry their own history of borrowed marks. Stussy's interlocking S's riff on Chanel's linked C's. The red Supreme box takes its white-Futura-on-red form from the artist Barbara Kruger, whose text-in-a-red-box pieces date to 1981, thirteen years before the shop opened; Supreme's founder later acknowledged in a court filing that the logo was "based directly" on her work.

The Blanks Underneath the Brands

An industry of unprinted shirts sits under the whole category. Wholesale catalogs sell finished garments with empty chests, cut to the same square silhouettes and priced by the dozen; a print shop turns a stack of them into a label in an afternoon. The first Stussy tees were Hanes blanks with a signature screened across the chest.

The current version of that shirt is the Max Heavyweight, heavier and squarer than the Hanes original. Shaka Wear, the Los Angeles supplier credited with the modern heavy blank, sews its bodies quarter-turned, a small rotation at assembly that keeps the factory crease out of the print area. Independent shops handle the decoration and publish menus that run from plastisol and water-based through embroidery to transfers and foil.

Seen From the Production Side

From the production side, the category is a blanks catalog plus a rate card. The catalog prices the body, and published wholesale tiers for the 7.5 oz benchmark run between roughly $4 and $10 apiece as order size moves. The rate card prices the print. One shop's posted list charges $1.75 to $2.00 a shirt for one color at orders of 72 pieces and up; the screen itself costs $25. A second shop sets up a one-color design for $30, once per order, the same fee for a dozen shirts as for ten dozen. One shop's full table puts a finished one-color tee on a mid-range blank at $4 to $6 at five hundred pieces.

The Word Is Older Than the Culture

Collins' dictionary entry dates the compound to 1820 to 1825, when it was written as two words, street wear, and meant clothes fit to be seen outdoors, the opposite of house dress.

Where It Started

It starts in Laguna Beach in 1980. Shawn Stussy, then 25, shaped surfboards in a canyon studio by day, signed each finished board in broad marker with a scrawl borrowed from his uncle, the painter Jan Stussy, and screened the same scrawl onto shirts as advertising for the boards, selling them out of his car and packing orders for local surf shops at night. The printing came from home; his parents ran a print shop, and he had been pulling screens at 12. At one trade show he sold about two dozen boards; the shirts he had brought along drew $8 apiece, a price set on the spot, and a thousand of them moved in three days, by his later telling. Stussy Inc. followed in 1984, a partnership with the accountant Frank Sinatra Jr., no relation to the singer, and the US trademark registered on March 27, 1986.

Daniel Day, trading as Dapper Dan, opened his Harlem atelier in 1982 and re-cut luxury monograms, Gucci, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, onto leather jackets and tracksuits for Big Daddy Kane, LL Cool J, and Biz Markie. Rakim and Eric B. posed in his Gucci-print jackets on the 1987 cover of Paid in Full. A Fendi lawsuit closed the shop in 1992. Twenty-five years later a Gucci runway jacket repeated one of his 1989 designs, and the house answered the backlash by taking him on as a partner and reopening the Harlem atelier.

On May 29, 1986, Run-DMC released My Adidas, a tribute to the low-top Superstar; the single hit No. 5 on Billboard's R&B chart, and adidas sales on the East Coast climbed with it. At Madison Square Garden that July 19 the group asked a sold-out crowd to hold their sneakers overhead while an adidas executive, Angelo Anastasio, watched from the floor. A follow-up tape addressed to the company ended with a shouted demand for a million dollars. The contract that came back, $1.6 million by Guinness's count, was the first sneaker endorsement signed outside sport.

In 1993 Nigo and Jun Takahashi opened the Nowhere store in Harajuku's back streets, and A Bathing Ape's camo and ape head came out of that room; the district, Ura-Harajuku, gave the scene its name. In New York, James Jebbia, fresh from running a Stussy shop, opened Supreme on Lafayette Street in 1994 as a skate shop. Louis Vuitton put the red box logo on a 2017 runway.

Selling Less Than People Want

James Jebbia laid out the arithmetic to Glenn O'Brien in a 2009 conversation for Interview: "if we can sell 600, I make 400." A sold-out item stays sold out; the company does not restock. In the same conversation he put the ideal at two weeks on sale, then gone for good.

The math predates the shop. A Bathing Ape's first years ran on about 50 shirts a week, a ceiling set by Nigo's budget; half sold over the Nowhere counter and half went free to Tokyo stylists and musicians whose photographs did the marketing. By 1998 the label sat in about 40 stores across Japan. Nigo cancelled every wholesale account that year and pulled the stock back to one flagship; sales soon passed their old level.

The shortage creates a second market. A sold-out release gets a second price from the buyers who missed it, the climbing resale cost lengthens the line at the next drop.

Where the Definition Stands Now

In June 2018 Louis Vuitton named Virgil Abloh, the designer behind Off-White, artistic director of its menswear; the road from a car trunk in Laguna Beach to the head of Louis Vuitton menswear took 38 years. A year and a half into the job he told Dazed where he thought the category was headed: "I would definitely say it's gonna die, you know?" He pointed at vintage and archive dressing as the successor. Three months later he pulled the prediction back: the category, he said, kept coming back from its deaths, and the walk-back came with a Louis Vuitton capsule co-designed with Nigo, the founder of A Bathing Ape. The monogram Dapper Dan once re-cut in Harlem was now on official product beside the ape.

My read of that exchange: he called the wrong half. By 2019 the garments were past dying; heavy cotton and wide cuts had settled into ordinary closets, and a look the ordinary closet absorbs has won for good. The half that can die is the fever. His vintage-and-archive forecast was a bet that the fever would move to the archive market, and the bet lasted three months. He took the prediction back with a capsule, a dated release in a fixed run, and the man announcing the funeral had to book it like any other drop.

Between a blank-and-screen operation and an LVMH runway, the garments no longer mark the boundary between tiers; the release calendar does. Complex's editors rank the field on cultural pull, define the category with no price ceiling, and note that many designers under the label treat it as a box to climb out of.
