The organising idea is that decoration needs no excuse, and that an outfit can hold three or four competing ideas. Baroque Patchwork Shirt $41.25. Every definition of maximalism you'll read is a list: bright colours, mixed prints, big accessories. That's fine until you're standing in front of a rail. A leopard shirt and a plain black tee are both one garment, and only one of them is doing anything. Count the edges instead. Every boundary between light and dark counts: where a pattern changes, where a seam runs, where a print stops, where a panel of one fabric meets a panel of another. A plain hoodie gives you a handful, where a patchwork shirt runs into the thousands. That count is what your eye reads as density. Here is how to run it on a garment in front of you. Start at four. Collar, two sleeve seams, hem. Every garment made has those, and a plain black tee stops there. Add the construction. Every panel that meets another panel adds a line. A yoked shirt adds one across the back, and a five-panel patchwork adds four. Raglan sleeves add two long curves where set-in sleeves add two short straight ones, which is why a raglan reads slightly busier in the same cloth. Add the applied work. A chest print adds the perimeter of whatever is printed, so a circular logo adds one line and a graffiti scrawl adds twenty. A patch adds its own outline plus the stitching around it, which is two. Studs add one apiece. Add the surface. A repeating pattern adds a line at every colour change, so counting stops being useful and you switch to estimating: fine repeat means hundreds, large-scale means dozens, animal print means somewhere in between and irregular. Then stop counting and look, because past about thirty the number has told you what it can. A garment at four is a background piece, one in the teens can lead an outfit, and past thirty the garment is the outfit. Start with shirts, because they're the densest thing in this wardrobe by a distance. A camp collar shirt is the one piece that gets used as a canvas. Measured across our own range, shirts come out about twice as busy as jeans, tees, jackets or hoodies. Buying one dense thing? Buy the shirt. And check the sleeves. A shirt that carries its pattern on the body and leaves the sleeves plain keeps that density only until a jacket goes over it. The Rule It Switches Off Nearly all streetwear runs on one instruction: one loud piece, everything else calm. Layering guides put it almost word for word, that if your shirt is graphic you go plain with your hoodie or jacket. They also cap the whole outfit at three visible layers. Maximalism switches that off. Two prints. Patch over patch. The competing pieces stay in. The instruction being switched off was doing real work, though. It kept outfits legible. Take it away and something else has to hold them together. What Holds a Dense Outfit Together The architect Robert Venturi, writing against the minimalism of his own field in 1966, put the case in one line: blatant simplification means bland architecture, less is a bore. The distinction he was drawing transfers. A dense outfit that works has a logic inside it, and one built on accumulation alone reads as a pile. Metal repeated in four places, which is what makes it read as a decision. Leather Gilet $66.63. Repetition first. One colour, shape or material showing up at least twice in separate places. The red in a shirt print coming back in a shoelace. A silver stud on the jacket answered by silver hardware on the belt. Repetition is what tells anyone looking that the density was chosen. Hierarchy second. One piece is loudest and it's obvious which. When two garments are both extremely busy, the outfit loses its subject to a tie. And a rest. One area kept nearly empty: a plain trouser, an uninterrupted sleeve, a bare neck. This feels like a betrayal of the whole project and is the thing most often skipped. Leave it out and density turns into wallpaper, the kind of thing people walk past. The quickest way to settle a maximalist outfit: find the second-loudest piece and demote it. Demote, not remove. Three ways to demote something, in order of how much they change the outfit: swap it for the same garment in a solid colour the loud piece already contains; keep it but cover most of it with a layer; or keep it and shrink its share of the outfit, so a printed trouser becomes a printed sock. Four Ways It Actually Gets Worn The densest thing in our range, at 4.1. Ink Wash Print Trousers $88.73. Where you put the density is mostly a question of what you already own and what you can stand looking at. The one-loud-piece version. One garment carrying nearly all the pattern, everything else plain. A patchwork shirt over a plain black tee, straight dark denim, plain shoes. This is the version that works in an office, at a dinner, and on a first-time wearer of pattern. It is also the version most people should start with, because a rest area teaches itself faster when it is the only quiet thing in the outfit. The two-print version. Two patterned garments, connected by a shared colour or separated by an obvious gap in scale. A large animal print trouser with a small repeating graphic on the shirt. The connection carries this one. Leave it out and the two prints read as two accidents that happened to the same person. Everything else in the outfit goes quiet, including the shoes. The layered version. Three or four visible garments, each moderately dense rather than one extreme piece. A graphic tee under an open patterned shirt under a studded jacket. This one gets its density from the boundaries between layers as much as from the surfaces. The lengths have to differ enough for each layer to show. Same length on two layers and you lose the edge that was doing the work. The monochrome version. Everything black or everything washed grey, with density built entirely from texture, hardware and pattern within the single colour. Patchwork in four black fabrics, distressed denim, a studded jacket, layered chains. It photographs flat, wears easily, and is the obvious choice if your wardrobe is already dark. Where the Density Comes From in Streetwear Large-scale camo, 2.2. Big shapes survive the squint test where small repeats do not. Work Denim Jacket $52.15. Womenswear maximalism runs on colour, print and jewellery. Streetwear gets there another way. The techniques don't behave the same. Print is the obvious one and the least interesting. A graphic tee is one flat image. It reads instantly and then it is finished. Patchwork is denser than print at the same size, because every panel edge is another boundary. A shirt made from four unrelated fabrics carries more information than the same shirt with four images printed on it. Distressing and washing create density out of the cloth itself. A washed black garment carries variation across its whole surface where a raw one stays even. That is why a distressed jean reads busier than a raw one of the same cut. Weight and drape decide whether any of this survives being worn. Heavy cotton holds a pattern flat and open, so you see all of it. A light rayon collapses into folds and shows you a third of it, broken up by shadow. Buy a piece for its pattern and you want a cloth that holds its shape. Hardware, meaning studs, rivets, chains and exposed zips, adds points of high contrast where print adds a field. Hardware creates rhythm along a line. Print fills a field. Embroidery and patches sit between the two. A patch is a print with an edge around it. That edge is why a patched jacket looks more worked over than a printed one. Layering multiplies everything above. Three garments visible at once is three surfaces, plus the two boundaries where they meet. Logos work as a density technique here, which is unusual. A large chest logo works as a print. Repeated as an all-over monogram it becomes a pattern. The awkward size is the middle one: too big to ignore, too small to read as pattern, competing with whatever else is on the garment for a small return. One shop's stock, offered as an illustration: of our own 1,807 products, 55% carry a print or graphic, 35% are described for layering, 29% are distressed, 16% embroidered, 14% carry patches, 10% patchwork, 9% studded. Bright shades account for under 15% of colourways, against 27% black. Another shop would split differently. A range like this runs almost entirely on density techniques. Reading the Scale in a Shop One loud half of the outfit, one silent. Spray Paint Jacket $57.12. The version you can do in a shop is cruder and takes about as long. Squint at it from across the shop. Detail below a certain size merges into a tone. If the piece still shows structure when blurred, that structure is what will read in a photograph and across a room. If it goes flat, the detail is close-range only. It won't contribute to an outfit's density, whatever it cost. Count the distinct regions. How many areas of the garment are visibly different from their neighbours? A plain shirt has two, the body and the collar. The Baroque patchwork shirt in our range has five: a graffiti sleeve, a skull panel on a lilac ground, a black-and-white Greek key stripe, a black-and-gold baroque panel and a framed floral on white. The count correlates closely with the edge measurement and takes a second. Check what happens at the seams. On a dense garment, the seam lines are usually invisible because the pattern crosses them. On a quiet garment they are the main event. This tells you whether the garment's information is applied to the surface or built into the construction. That decides whether it survives being layered over. That last one decides how a garment behaves under a layer: a dense garment needs at least half of it visible to do its job. Four Outfits You Can Actually Build Stripe, print and a colour change at the sleeve: 2.1 from three techniques at once. Faux Two-Piece Shirt $80.98. Each of these sets one busy piece against quiet ones. The numbers in brackets are the squint test run mechanically. Method, in case you want to argue with it. Each product photo is pulled at 340px wide, cropped to the middle of the frame, blurred with a three-pixel Gaussian, and scored on the mean absolute difference between neighbouring pixels across all three colour channels. The blur went in after the first run came back wrong. That run scored the photographs as they were, and the garment it put at the top was an open-knit polo, a plain grey one. The five-panel patchwork shirt, the piece the whole method was built to identify, came in underneath it. Nothing was broken. Every stitch in an open knit is a boundary between yarn and hole, and an open knit has thousands of them evenly spread. The measurement was doing exactly what it was asked and returning a garment that anyone would describe as plain. Adding the blur fixed it and also explained the squint test, which had been sitting in the article as folk advice. Squinting is a low-pass filter. It removes detail below a threshold and keeps everything above it, which is the same operation, and the reason the folk advice works is that the boundaries which survive a squint are the boundaries that survive distance. Three pixels on a 340px crop is where the polo dropped back into the middle of the range and the patchwork shirt went to the top. That is the calibration: not a value chosen from theory, but the amount of blur it took to make the numbers agree with what a person sees. Across 600 garments in our range the median came out at 2.0 and the busiest single piece reached 4.5. Two caveats. The crop includes some background, so how large a garment sits in the frame affects its score. The scale is relative, so treat these as bands: under 1 is plain, 2 is ordinary, above 3 is a garment doing the work on its own. 1. Shirt-led, for most days. Striped faux two-piece shirt (2.1) · plain barrel trouser (1.4) · plain boot. One garment carries everything. The trouser is doing the most important job in the outfit by being boring. It works in a normal week. Start here. 2. Trouser-led, when the top half has to stay quiet. Cheetah print barrel trousers (1.5) · plain heavy tee (0.9) · dark jacket. The inverse of the first. Harder to wear, because the density sits at the bottom where the eye ends up, so the outfit reads slower. 3. Two-piece density, once you know what you are doing. Frayed plaid short-sleeve shirt (2.5) over a printed tee (0.6) · camouflage multi-pocket work denim jacket (2.2) · plain trouser. Three surfaces visible, none of them at the top of the scale, one plain area at the bottom. The scores here are the least useful of the four, because each garment is measured flat and laid out, while in the outfit the tee is a collar and the shirt is half under a jacket. Layering is where the measurement hands over to your eye. 4. Outerwear-led, for cold weather. Leopard print hooded jacket (1.6) · plain tee · plain trouser · plain boot. Everything under the jacket is support. The rule here is unusual: because the jacket comes off indoors, what is underneath has to work on its own, so this is really two outfits. The indoor one runs at the bottom of the scale. Three of the four run one lead piece at roughly double the median with everything else at or below it. Maximalism Without Colour Ask most people to picture maximalism and they'll describe a riot of colour. That's one version of it. Density 2.6, colour saturation near zero. Rhinestones, print and a fur collar, no hue anywhere. Rhinestone Leather Jacket $135.41. Density can be built entirely inside black, grey and washed-out neutral. Every technique above works in monochrome: a patchwork shirt cut from four black fabrics carries the same panel edges it would in four colours, a washed jean varies across its surface whatever the shade, studs catch light regardless of what is behind them. You lose one dimension of variation. In exchange, hierarchy gets easier to control, because nothing is competing on hue, and the piece that leads is whichever one has the most going on rather than whichever one is brightest. This matters practically because most streetwear wardrobes are already dark. Adding maximalism to them means adding texture, pattern and hardware to what is already there. One thing to watch if you run the measurement yourself: score it in greyscale rather than across the three colour channels, and a monochrome outfit beats a bright one every time. Picture the case where it bites. A mid-red shirt under a mid-green jacket is about as loud as two colours get. Run a greyscale score on that photograph and it comes back low enough to file the outfit as quiet, because greyscale keeps lightness and throws away hue, and those two colours sit at nearly the same lightness. The boundary between them is pure hue, so the measurement reads flat cloth where your eye reads the loudest thing in the room. Blue against orange does it too, and so does any pair from opposite sides of the wheel matched for value. The rule is that the clash and the blind spot arrive together: the more purely a pair differs in hue alone, the less a lightness-only measure will see. Summing the three channels separately is what catches it. The red channel sees a difference across that boundary, the green channel sees another one, and neither cancels. The method above works that way for that reason. Which leaves the useful conclusion for a wardrobe. A black outfit can be extremely dense, a beige one nearly empty, and no measurement that begins by discarding hue will tell you which of the two you are looking at. Adjusting It to Your Frame Trouser-led, with everything above it staying quiet. Cheetah Print Barrel Pants $83.83. How much surface you've got changes how the density lands. On a larger frame a dense garment has more area to fill, so a pattern that reads as busy on a small shirt reads as balanced on a large one. Scale matters here: the same print covering a larger area reads as a length of fabric where a smaller area reads as a decorated garment. Larger-scale patterns handle this better than small repeating ones, because a small repeat multiplied over a big surface turns into texture and loses its shape. On a smaller frame the opposite applies. A large print gets cropped by the garment's edges and you see a fragment rather than a motif. Smaller repeats keep their structure. This is also the frame where the one-loud-piece version works best, because a single dense garment already occupies a large share of the visible outfit. If you are short in the leg, keep the dense piece above the waist. A patterned trouser marks where your leg starts and ends, which shortens it twice. A patterned shirt leaves the leg unmarked below the hem. On any frame, layering adds bulk before it adds density. Three visible layers on a narrow build reads as considered; on a broader build it can read as padding. The monochrome version solves this better than the layered one, because it builds density without adding garments. Across the Seasons Summer is the difficult one. Layering is out for the season and a single garment has to carry everything, and the shirt earns its place there: worn open over a plain tee it gives you two surfaces and a set of edges without a second full layer. Shorts are harder. A dense short has less area than a dense trouser, so the outfit's centre of gravity moves up. The coat is the biggest surface anyone sees, so it sets the density for the whole outfit. Quilted Jacket $94.71. Winter is the easy season. The outer layer is the largest single surface anyone sees, so a patterned or studded coat sets the density for everything and what goes underneath can stay plain. One purchase changes the whole wardrobe. Spring and autumn belong to the layered version: three garments visible, moderate density on each, lengths staggered so every layer contributes an edge. Deciding Where to Stop Every thing you add makes the case for one more. The logic that justified the second print justifies the third, then the fourth. That is how a wardrobe full of good pieces produces an outfit that looks like a gift shop. Pick the point where the outfit is finished before you start putting it on, and pick it by category rather than by feel. Decide that this outfit gets two patterns, or one metal, or three visible layers, and stop when you hit the number regardless of what is left in the wardrobe. Category works where feel fails. Feel is the thing that keeps saying yes. By the time you are looking in the mirror, every previous addition has already recalibrated what looks normal to you, so the fourth print looks about as reasonable as the second one did. The one that catches most people is jewellery, because it goes on last and it is the cheapest thing to add. If you only set one limit, set it on the jewellery. Five Fixes When something is off, these are the moves, roughly in order of how often they are the answer. Two techniques at once: patches on a colour-blocked body. The quiet sleeve is what stops it tipping over. Collage Jacket $116.70. Give the outfit a subject. When two or more garments sit at the top of the density scale with none clearly leading, take the second-loudest and swap it for something in a colour the loudest one already contains. Make the palette repeat. Four or five shades with none appearing twice reads as accumulated. Pick two, place each of them in two separate spots, and let the rest drop to accents. Repetition is what makes a palette look chosen. Separate the patterns. Two prints at similar scale and no shared colour merge into one texture at any distance. Change one of them for something at an obviously different scale, or put a solid layer between them. Open up one area. Usually the trouser or the shoe. It feels like a retreat and it is the single most reliable move in the list. Draw one clear line. Enough density and the outfit becomes a single textured mass. Put a shape back into it: a defined shoulder, a visible waist, a narrow ankle, or one uninterrupted vertical layer. Treat the shoes as a decision. Every outfit above says "plain shoe", which is doing more work than it sounds. A shoe sits at the end of a vertical line and gets read as a full stop, so a loud one competes from the hardest position on the body. Shoes can lead. Everything above them then drops to support, and the patterned trouser is out. Sole colour matters as much as upper: a white midsole under a dark outfit puts a bright band at the bottom of the frame and cuts the whole thing off at the ankle. Maximalist, Eclectic, and the Third Thing These words get used interchangeably even though they describe different things. Eclectic mixes references: periods, sources, subcultures. An eclectic outfit can be perfectly quiet. A 1970s shirt with modern trousers qualifies, even if neither piece has a pattern on it. Maximalist is about how much there is to look at. Where the pieces came from is beside the point: an outfit bought entirely from one brand's current season counts, if it carries enough pattern, texture and hardware. Then there is the third case: density with nothing repeating and nothing leading. What separates it from maximalism isn't restraint, it's structure. In practice: a graphic tee in one colourway, a plaid shirt in unrelated colours over it, cargo trousers in a third palette, a chunky trainer in a fourth, a chain because it was on the dresser. Every piece is defensible on its own. Each piece refers only to itself, the point stays unclaimed, and every surface carries something. Take two of those four palettes out and the same pieces become an outfit. How It Differs From Other Dark, Dense Styles Opium style overlaps most and is the easiest to confuse, because both run dark and both use texture. The difference is what carries the outfit. Opium runs on weight distribution, tight above and heavy below, and on matte surfaces, with the chest deliberately empty. Maximalism puts information on the chest and leaves the volume wherever it falls. Our opium style guide works through that system. Grunge and its descendants use distressing and layering. Those read as density, but the intent is decay rather than decoration. Maximalist pieces are added. Grunge pieces look subtracted. Minimalism is the direct opposite and worth reading against this. It is built to give away as little as possible: no logo, no print, no cut that dates it, with the money going into cloth and seams you cannot see. Our minimalist fashion guide covers it. Maximalism inverts every one of those choices. The money and the effort go into what is immediately visible. Building It From What You Own Maximalism gets sold to you as an instruction to buy more. Mostly it's a way of combining what you already have. Start with one dense piece worn against things you already own, with one colour from it repeated somewhere else. Layer what you already have. Going from two visible garments to three doubles the surface for free. Your plainest pieces are working pieces. A solid black trouser is what makes a patchwork shirt legible. If you are buying, buy the shirt. It is the one piece that comes off when the outfit turns out to be too much. Second-hand suits this better than anything else. Density benefits from pieces that arrived from unrelated places, a slow way to build a wardrobe and an argument for buying used. Questions That Come Up Is maximalism just wearing everything at once? No. What settles it is whether anything in the outfit repeats and whether one area is left quiet, more than how many garments there are. Seven pieces sharing a colour hold together better than four sharing none. Can an all-black outfit be maximalist? Yes, and it's the easiest version to control, since nothing is competing on colour. The pieces that lead are the ones with the most surface variation. How many patterns can I wear at once? Two is manageable, three needs a shared colour or a clear difference in scale, four needs a reason. The number matters less than whether the patterns have something in common and whether there is somewhere for the eye to rest. Does maximalism mean expensive? The opposite, usually. The densest garments in our own range run $41 to $89. Decoration is cheap to produce. What costs is good cloth and construction you can't see. Is it going out of style? Minimalism and maximalism have alternated for as long as either word has existed, and each return is a reaction to the last. Both have been declared dead several times.
