What Is Techwear?
Techwear is clothing made from outdoor performance materials and cut for a city. It runs on waterproof breathable membranes and sealed zips, with straps that are carrying something and pockets cut to the size of whatever is meant to go in them. Almost all of it is black. The name is recent. These clothes had been in production for forty years before the word turned up.
There is a problem with the word, and it is not a small one: techwear now names two entirely separate things that happen to look alike, one of them a garment engineered to keep rain out while letting sweat through, the other a black hoodie with straps sewn onto it. Shops sell both under the same word. Ten seconds with the garment in hand separates them.
Where the Word Came From
The word welds technical to wear, and its first use went unrecorded. It spread through online forums during the 2010s among wearers who needed a shorthand the fashion press had not supplied. Shops that sell the clothes date it anywhere from the early 2000s to the 2010s, each on its own authority.
Bob Gore stretched polytetrafluoroethylene into a porous film in 1969, and that film is still what most of these garments are built around. So the word trails the membrane by about forty years and the clothes by fifteen.
That gap is why the word is loose. A term coined in a laboratory arrives with a definition attached; this one arrived carrying whatever the forums needed it to mean that week, and it was doing two jobs from the start: naming a set of construction methods, and naming a look that borrows from them. Neither job has been separated from the other since, so two people can use the word in the same sentence about entirely different garments.
Massimo Osti Built the Clothes First
Massimo Osti founded Chester Perry in Bologna in 1971 and renamed it CP Company in 1978 after Chester Barrie and Fred Perry sued over the name. His method was archival: buy military and industrial garments, take them apart, work out why each detail existed, then rebuild it in a new fabric. The working archive at CP Company held over 35,000 garments by 1996.
Stone Island followed in 1982. Its first collection used one fabric only: a two-tone reversible cloth from truck tarpaulins, stone washed. It sold out at every stockist within ten days.
What came after reads like a laboratory notebook. Raso Gommato in 1983. Rubber Flax and Rubber Wool after it, linen and wool rubberised. The Ice Jacket in 1987, built from a Japanese material called Sway, a resin-coated nylon holding thermosensitive microcapsules; it changed colour as the temperature moved, and the first run offered yellow to green, white to blue, and pink to grey. Reflective fabric in 1991. After his death in 2005 his family reorganised the material into the Massimo Osti Archive, 5,000 garments and more than 50,000 fabric samples from around 300 mills, a selection out of the working collection.
ACRONYM Made It a Category
Errolson Hugh was born in Edmonton in 1971 to Chinese Jamaican parents, studied fashion in Toronto, disliked it, and left for Munich speaking no German.
In 1994 he and Michaela Sachenbacher set up ACRONYM there as a design consultancy, with no label of their own. They spent years working for other people, including a run with Burton Snowboards that lasted close to fourteen years.
The first garment under their own name came in 2002. It was called Kit-1, and shipped as a set: a jacket, a messenger bag, a soundtrack. Eight years of paid design work went by before anything carried their own name.
Hugh calls his approach inspiration agnostic. The cuts come from military kit and martial arts. The clothes are dark and almost entirely without logos. A J1A jacket, the shape the label is known for, now runs past 1,500 dollars.
Tokyo Built Its Own Version in 1994
The same question got a different answer in Japan in the same year, and it came from a designer who had spent a decade inside the Issey Miyake studio. Kosuke Tsumura won the So-en prize in 1982 at twenty-three, an award Yohji Yamamoto had taken before him, and joined the Issey Miyake Design Studio the following year. In 1994 he launched Final Home under the Miyake umbrella, the same year ACRONYM was set up in Munich.
The garment it is known for was built around a question. Tsumura's premise was that a designer ought to be able to say what a person wears after a disaster or a war or a redundancy has taken the roof away, a question the trade had never put to itself and one that no amount of fabric research answers on its own. His answer was a clear nylon parka with forty-four pockets, meant to be stuffed with newspaper for insulation.
Set that against the nine pockets on a J1A and the difference in intent is visible. One garment is built for a person who might need to sleep in it. The other is built for a person who might need to run for a train.
That studio kept producing people who cut technical clothes. And Wander was founded in 2011 by Keita Ikeuchi and Mihoko Mori, both of whom had worked under Miyake before going to the mountains for their patterns. Final Home itself ran for close to two decades and wound down around 2013. The coat sits in museum collections, and Tsumura's work is cited as an influence on Moreno Ferrari's Urban Protection range for CP Company.
What the Fabric Label Tells You
Almost everything separating a technical garment from a costume sits on a label inside it, where it usually stays. A waterproof breathable shell is a sandwich. Outside is the face fabric, nylon or polyester, and it takes the abrasion. Underneath sits a membrane, in Gore-Tex an expanded PTFE film with pores small enough to block liquid water and large enough to pass water vapour. The number on the tag says what protects the membrane on the inside.
A jacket marked 2L has the membrane bonded to the face fabric with a separate lining hanging loose inside. Heavier and cheaper, and the usual construction under ski insulation.
A jacket marked 2.5L carries no lining, only a print or spray applied straight onto the inside of the membrane, and the 0.5 counts that half measure; of the three it is the lightest and packs down smallest.
A jacket marked 3L has face fabric, membrane and a knit backer laminated into a single piece of cloth, so the three plies move together and wear together, which gives it the longest life of the three and, despite the name, the handle of a single layer.
Weight follows construction closely enough to check: a 2.5L Outdoor Research Helium Rain runs 6.3 ounces; a 3L Patagonia Storm10 with a 20-denier shell and a 7-denier liner runs 8.3; a 3L Torrentshell with a 50-denier face and a tricot backer runs 14.1; a 2L Columbia Watertight II runs 13.
Two numbers matter more than the letter on the tag. Hydrostatic head, given in millimetres, is the height of a water column the fabric holds before it leaks; 10,000mm is roughly where a garment stops being water-resistant and starts being rainproof, and 20,000mm and up is the range for sustained weather. Moisture vapour transmission comes next, in grams per square metre per day, where 10,000 to 15,000 covers walking and cycling, and 20,000 and above is what high-output kit carries. Some European brands print RET instead, on a scale where lower is better and anything under 6 counts as excellent.
Read those numbers with some suspicion. Several test methods exist, manufacturers quote the flattering one.

Gore-Tex is not the only membrane on a label, and the other names on there are worth the same reading: Schoeller for stretch woven softshell, Cordura where a garment expects abrasion, YKK AquaGuard on a zip that seals.
A Techwear Jacket Broken Down by the Numbers
One jacket carries published numbers for all of this, which makes it easier to examine than most. ACRONYM's J1A was drawn between 1999 and 2001 and shipped in 2002 as half of ACR Kit-1, the first product the company ever sold; the other half was a bag. Hugh drew jacket and bag to work together. The jacket comes on and off without the bag leaving your shoulder. That arrangement is patented as Interops.
ACRONYM builds the current version from 3L Gore-Tex Pro, 70 per cent polyamide and 30 per cent ePTFE, over a Micro Grid backer. A size medium weighs 745 grams with every removable part attached. It carries nine pockets, all external and none inside, and four parts unclip entirely: the storm hood, the sling, the ForceLock and the logo tape.
Errolson Hugh calls it a full-spectrum garment. The company, he says, does not presume to know what the wearer will be doing in it.
The most useful account of it came from TCHWR, a reviewer who wore one for a year. It is loud. It is rigid. The sling pulls under the armpits, and the reviewer ended up wearing it on rainy days only, keeping softer shells for the rest of the week. One feature, a velcro tab meant to hold a rolled sleeve, does not work at all: the waterproof zip track running along the pocket is too stiff to fold.
How to Spot Techwear That Does Nothing
Pick the garment up and ask, of every strap and pocket and zip on it, what work that part is doing.
Pull a strap. If it is holding a hood, cinching a waist or converting the jacket to carry, it is hardware. If it hangs off a shoulder attached at both ends to nothing, it is trim.
Open a pocket. Technical pockets are sized for objects: a phone, a passport, a folded map, a bike lock. Decorative pockets are sewn flat to the surface and sized for a hand. Read the zip. A sealed zip carries a polyurethane film over the teeth. A standard coil zip leaves them bare, and water runs straight through.
Then find the composition label and look at how the cloth has been treated. A natural fibre can be made technical, as Osti's rubberised linen and wool showed, and Ventile is cotton woven tight enough for polar kit. Untreated cotton jersey does no work at all. A 39 dollar dropship techwear tee is cut from exactly that.
The Garments That Make Up an Outfit
A short list covers almost all of it. Running from the skin outward: on top, a hardshell with a helmet-compatible hood, taped seams and pit zips. Under it a grid fleece or a softshell. The layer against skin is merino or a synthetic base. Cotton holds sweat and stays wet.
Below, a tapered technical trouser in stretch woven nylon, articulated at the knee, with zipped thigh pockets and a gusseted crotch. Cargo cuts are common and the pockets on them are load-bearing.
On the feet, a trail runner or an approach shoe; Salomon's XT-6 turns up more than any other single model. Carried, a sling or a chest rig, worn across the body.
The silhouette narrows at the head, drapes through the middle and tapers at the ankle. Colour holds to black, charcoal, olive and the occasional grey.
Why It Rarely Fits Women
The complaints from people buying this kit on a frame that is not a men's medium are specific, and they land on the same seam every time.
A membrane fits any body the same way. The pattern underneath is another matter. The labels that set the vocabulary, ACRONYM among the military-derived ones and Outlier and Veilance among the plainer, cut for a cis male body, and everything else is sized down from there.
Sizing down leaves the problem where it was, at the shoulder, since a men's block sets the seam point further out than a narrower frame can carry, so that the seam ends up somewhere on the upper arm. The jacket then hangs off the body, and the layering underneath disappears.
Much of what gets marketed to women is the men's garment in a smaller size. The fit suffers and the comfort goes with it and the function after that, none of which shows up as a discount. The writer making that case in 2019 put the underlying problem plainly enough: women were still, that year, trying to buy clothes with working pockets.
A garment cut on a women's block shows it at the shoulder, where the seam lands on the actual shoulder point and the sleeve drops from there.
Why It Is Almost Always Black
The rule was never written down. Part of the answer sits in the chemistry; the rest does not.
The chemistry settles how narrow the field is. A durable water repellent finish repels dye molecules exactly as it repels water, so colour has to be fixed before the finish goes on, or mixed into the polymer before the yarn is even extruded. That second route, solution dyeing, gives the fastness these garments need and has historically come in a narrow range of colours.
The membrane itself takes no dye at all, and there is one production fabric that proves it. Gore launched Shakedry in 2016 with the membrane as the outer face and no face fabric over it, bringing a cycling jacket down to around 174 grams. Conventional dyes would not stick to that surface, so it shipped in black only, and the dark grey on the earliest versions was the colour the membrane comes out. Grey and blue took until 2018 and arrived through panels of other fabric. Gore retired the material around 2022.
None of that explains black over navy or charcoal, and this is where the wearers take over. Anonymity is half the point, since these clothes are meant to let a person cross a city without being read and black reads as nothing. Hugh's own answer to which single outfit he would keep was three product codes in matte black, with no colour and no contrast anywhere in it.
The Waterproofing Wears Out
A membrane is a consumable. Hangtags rarely mention it. A polyurethane binder holds the three plies of a 3L shell together, and the salts and grease in human sweat eat polyurethane. Left long enough the bond fails and the layers come apart, starting at the neck and the cuff tape, and that is delamination: it cannot be repaired, and it finishes a jacket as a waterproof garment.
Washing postpones it, against the usual instinct to keep a good jacket out of the machine. The Czech maker Tilak, comparing two of its own jackets worn nine and ten years, put a badly kept shell at under four years.
One misreading of all this is common enough to cost people jackets. When the water-repellent finish on the face fabric wears off, the outer cloth soaks through and goes cold, and the warm air inside condenses against it. The wearer feels wet and concludes the jacket leaks. The membrane is usually still working. Twenty minutes on medium heat in a dryer often brings the finish back.
Gore replaced its PTFE membrane with an ePE version carrying no intentionally added PFAS, and by 2025 the Pro line had followed. New shells at retail now carry it. It runs lighter and thinner than the film it replaced.
Why a Techwear Jacket Costs 1,500 Dollars
The 1,500 dollar jacket has a cost structure, and most of it is fabric.
Gore-Tex sells to manufacturers at 70 to 200 dollars a yard, with Gore-Tex Pro above that, against a few dollars for the cotton jersey in a printed tee. Fabric is the largest single line in almost any garment cost, and here it is the largest by a wide margin.
Volume is the second line. Mills quote by the thousand yards, and a hundred-metre order picks up a small-lot surcharge of 25 to 40 per cent. A label producing a few hundred of a style pays that every time.
There is a cheaper way, and it has a specific price. Swapping licensed Gore-Tex for a polyurethane membrane takes 35 to 40 per cent off the finished jacket. The trade is durability: an ePTFE membrane holds its waterproofing past twenty washes, while a PU membrane loses 15 to 20 per cent of its effectiveness over the same run.
That is the arithmetic behind the price ladder. Buying up the ladder is buying pattern work, hardware and small production runs. The membrane at 200 dollars and the membrane at 1,500 can be the same membrane.
What It Is Not
Three adjacent styles get called techwear from outside, plus a fourth pair by association. Each borrows something and leaves the rest.
Gorpcore takes the same materials into a different context. The name comes from GORP, the trail mix of good old raisins and peanuts. Its reference points are mountains: Patagonia, Arc'teryx, Salomon, earth tones, fleece. Techwear points at the city and keeps to black.
Warcore is the tactical end. Plate-carrier silhouettes, webbing, chest rigs worn empty, military surplus styling without military function. A good deal of what sells as techwear now belongs here.
Normcore and minimalism run the same muted palette. The resemblance is a colour coincidence. Neither says anything about whether the cloth performs, and a 3L tag settles that question before any other.
Why Wearers Say the Word Is Ruined
People who have worn this for a decade object to what the word has become. Writing for Aftermath in 2025, Luke Plunkett put the complaint plainly: most of what gets called techwear now is warcore, and much of the rest is fast fashion with no technical benefit at all, missing everything from waterproofing to breathability.
The word was built to mean technical, and the evidence that it no longer does is easy to find. Dropship sites sell a samurai-print cotton t-shirt for 39 dollars under the techwear label. The shirt has no membrane, no coating and no sealed anything.
Plunkett's counter-argument is about time. A garment bought in 2015 still looks right in 2025. That matters when a pair of trousers costs 400 dollars.
Does Any of It Still Get Worn
The loud version peaked around 2020 and receded, and what followed is harder to spot from across a street. Salomon trail runners turn up on pavements far from any trail. Nike's ACG line, revived in 2014 with Errolson Hugh consulting, sits in ordinary sneaker shops. That quieter version has a date of its own. Arc'teryx launched Veilance in October 2009 with fifteen pieces, taking the performance fabrics and laminations off the mountain and cutting them into classic menswear shapes without spare zips, pockets or logos. Errolson Hugh, who had designed menswear at Arc'teryx himself, gave the line its name. Veilance coats now turn up on people who have never used the word techwear about themselves. Outlier in New York sells technical trousers direct, Vollebak builds garments around single materials, and Guerrilla-Group and Riot Division work the harder-edged end.
The visible hardware thinned out. The membranes stayed on, so that Gore-Tex now turns up in shops that have never put the word techwear on a sign and on people who would not use it about themselves.
Common Questions
No. Something in the outfit should be doing technical work. A stretch woven trouser and a grid fleece are both technical without being waterproof. A cotton hoodie with straps sewn on is doing no work at all.
Arc'teryx, Patagonia and Norrøna do, on their main outdoor lines. Their fashion sub-labels are a different matter. Rosen-X was founded for it. Most of the labels that defined the look did not.
A shell from an outdoor brand starts around 200 dollars and carries the same membrane as anything sold at ten times that. Nike ACG sits between the two. Everything above that tier is buying pattern work and hardware.
