The Full Outfit, Item by Item

The canonical version has been written down enough times to quote. A blue Newcastle United shirt, straight-leg jeans, classic Sambas. Or a nineties Arsenal shirt with JVC across the chest, straight-leg jeans, Sambas in white.

Underneath the jersey, a plain long-sleeve in white or black if the weather calls for it. Over it, if anything, a track jacket or a plain bomber. On the head, a beanie or an unbranded cap. One chain or one watch, and nothing else.

The rule that makes it work sits in the fabric. Put a shiny polyester jersey over shiny polyester shorts and the result reads as a player waiting to come on. The bottom half has to be a material that never went near a pitch. Heavy denim, corduroy, wool trousers. A synthetic top over a natural-fibre bottom carries the outfit further than the fit does.

The video that named the thing in 2021 holds the same three items. Blue shirt, boot-cut jeans, white Sambas. Four years on, the trouser cut is the only thing that moved.

Why Only One Piece Can Be Loud

One garment carries the pattern and the colour. The rest of the outfit gets out of its way.

One styling breakdown puts relaxed on the top half over a straight leg underneath. A loose shirt over loose trousers reads as fancy dress. The failure sits in the proportion.

Accessories follow the same logic. A beanie, a plain cap, a crossbody bag. Nothing that competes with the shirt for attention, and one accessory is the working limit.

Cold weather is where the rule gets tested. An anorak, a half-zip, a plain heavyweight sweatshirt or a bomber can go over or under the shirt, and each of them works on the same condition: it stays plain. A patterned jacket over a patterned kit puts two competing surfaces on one torso, and the shirt loses the argument.

The Jeans and the Trainers

The bottom half of a blokecore outfit is a straight leg in mid or dark denim over a low, flat trainer with a gum sole and a suede upper.

The wash is not decoration. All three shades start from the same indigo and separate by how long the garment sits in the rinse, as the trade sets it out. Light wash comes back pale and soft, most of its dye gone. Mid wash keeps the blue most people picture when they hear the word jeans. Dark wash goes through the least processing, holds the indigo,

Dark denim absorbs light and recedes. Pale denim expands and pulls the eye. That is why the canon specifies mid to dark and rules out the pale stuff.

Adidas Samba is the shoe named most often, with Gazelle, Nike Cortez and Puma following.

The Samba is not an accident of taste. Adi Dassler drew it in 1949 for footballers training on frozen ground in post-war Germany, and it shipped in 1950. The gum sole was there to grip ice. The reinforced overlay across the toe, the T-toe that still identifies the shoe, protected the foot. The first version came in kangaroo leather and sat at mid-top height. The low cut arrived in a 1972 revision.

The name has two accounts. The widely repeated one has adidas picking it before the 1950 World Cup in Brazil to present the shoe there. Adidas itself tells the story differently, saying the shoe earned the nickname on a German pitch for how it performed on ice.

Skateboarders took it in the nineties. Grace Wales Bonner, CFDA International Menswear Designer of the Year in 2021, is the name attached to its return.

A lab that cut a Samba OG in half put numbers on why it sits the way it does under a trouser. Heel stack 20.3mm, forefoot 11.7mm, a drop of 8.6mm, outsole 6.1mm thick. Nothing there to lift a leg line or interrupt it.

The outsole still has the pivot point and the ring of suction cups the football shoe was given, doing nothing now for the purpose they were cut for. The gum compound that solved the ice problem in 1949 came back among the lowest grip readings that lab has recorded on a sneaker outsole. A shoe built to grip frozen ground slides on wet pavement.

The shoe repeats that in miniature. The pivot point is still cut into the rubber and pivots nothing. The gum is still there and grips almost nothing.

On sizing, the length runs true. The width does not. The last is narrow through the midfoot and forefoot, with a tapering toe box. Wide feet go up half a size. The leather needs breaking in. The sole is flat enough that a wearer used to cushioning notices its absence for about a week.

Reach for a chunky runner and the leg line breaks at the ankle. Skinny jeans break it at the knee. The leg falls straight to the shoe without breaking hard, and 20mm of heel stack finishes the line.

How to Date a Shirt

Of the three garments, only the shirt carries a date, and the wordmark across the chest is where the date is written.

A kit from roughly 1990 to 2005 sells fastest, cut wide by current standards, in the polyester the industry had settled on by the 1970s, with mesh panels cut in for air. The sponsor across the chest is the identifying mark and half the appeal. Sharp on a Manchester United shirt places it between 1982 and 2000. JVC on an Arsenal shirt places it between 1981 and 1999. O2, Pirelli, Ina Assitalia: the wordmark dates the garment more precisely than the badge does.

Two shirts from the same club five years apart can carry different sponsors, different manufacturers and different collar treatments, and collectors price them accordingly. A kit worn during a season the club won something costs more than the same kit from the season before.

Home kits, away kits and third kits all count, along with national teams. Brazil in yellow, Juventus in stripes, a goalkeeper shirt in whatever colour the nineties allowed: all inside the category.

The period matters for construction as much as for nostalgia. Kits from the early nineties were cut with room in them. The players wore them loose and the replica followed the player. Somewhere after 2010 the industry moved to a body-mapped fit that clings, and those shirts do not work for this. A 1994 shirt in a modern large hangs off a modern medium frame.

What a Nineties Shirt Actually Measures

Those three garments only work at particular dimensions, and the shirt is where the dimensions are published. Twenty to twenty-one inches pit to pit. Twenty-six to twenty-seven from collar to hem. A dealer chart gives those figures for a medium of that era, 51 to 53cm across and 66 to 69cm down.

Cut varied by manufacturer more than by club. Umbro ran the boxiest of the decade, and the 1994 Newcastle home and 1995 Manchester United away shirts get named as the extremes. Adidas and Nike of the same years cut generous bodies without matching Umbro. Lotto and early Kappa came in tighter and shorter.

The outlier runs the other way. Kappa's Kombat range of the early 2000s, worn by Roma, Feyenoord and Italy, was cut to grip the body, and dealers advise adding two or three sizes to get something wearable out of it. The Roma shirt Kim Kardashian was photographed in comes from a club that spent part of that period in the tightest kit on the market.

Four dealers say a nineties shirt runs a full size larger than a modern one and advise sizing down. One dealer says the opposite, that a 1994 XL wears like a modern medium or large, and advises sizing up.

Both camps are describing something real. The bodies were cut wide. The size labels came off older European conventions that do not map onto current ones.

Player-issue shirts are cut slimmer than the replicas sold to supporters. The same season and the same club can produce two shirts that fit differently by a size.

Tucking

Tuck a football shirt and watch what happens over the next hour. It has no shirttail weight. Without a belt the hem climbs back over the waistband.

Most people leave it out. An oversized or vintage cut wants it that way. A half tuck, front panel only, adds a waistline without committing to the full thing. Adidas advises keeping full tucks for fitted or regular cuts, where a shirt has enough shape to survive it.

Who Coined It, and When

23 December 2021. A TikTok user called Brandon Huntley, raised in North Carolina, posted a video captioned with a claim: hottest trend of 2022, bloke core. He was wearing a blue football shirt, boot-cut jeans and white Adidas Sambas.

The word came from a friend, who had written "bloke" under an earlier post as a joke. Bloke is British slang for an ordinary man, roughly what an American means by dude.

The video took five months to reach 233,800 plays and 30,500 likes. A duet appeared on 28 December. In April 2022 the thing broke. On 20 April the user bulian1 filed an Urban Dictionary entry. A person who wears a vintage football jersey with adidas samba shoes to blend in with the football community.

The founding video is wearing boot-cut jeans. Every style piece published since specifies straight leg, a detail the canon lost within four months.

Why the Casuals Took Their Colours Off

Huntley named something in 2021 that had been on English terraces since before he was born. The clothes blokecore borrows from arrived on English terraces in 1976 and 1977, when Liverpool fans followed the club through European competition and brought back, as Grailed's history records, sportswear that British shops did not stock. Adidas, Lacoste, Sergio Tacchini, Fila, Ellesse, Kappa, Diadora, CP Company, Stone Island.

They stopped wearing club colours for practical reasons, and the practical reason was that a police force trained to spot skinheads in Dr Martens and donkey jackets had no template for a nineteen-year-old in a Lacoste polo and Adidas Forest Hills, which meant that a lad who wanted to travel to an away fixture without being stopped, searched or turned back at the station could do it by dressing better than the officers watching him. The absence of a badge also settled the question of which pub a man could drink in.

The uniform that resulted: a Peter Storm cagoule in polyurethane-coated nylon, straight-leg jeans, adidas trainers. A former Royal Marine named Noel Bibby had started the company in 1954 to make waterproofs.

Blokecore kept two thirds of that outfit and reversed the third.

The reversal is the whole of it. Everything the casuals did with clothes was aimed at going unrecognised. No club colours, so a police force looking for skinheads had nothing to match. No insignia, so a lad could walk into a pub full of rival supporters. Blokecore keeps the trousers and the trainers, then adds the one garment that announces a club, a season, a sponsor and a squad number. That garment now sells at volume to people who want exactly that announcement.

The ethic ran on scarcity, and one participant put it in a sentence. Once you made your purchase you hoped you would not see your top on the terraces worn by another lad. Labels turned over week by week. A shirt half the away end owned was worth nothing.

Three items, named in one video, and the same three turned up on every feed.

Who Has Worn It, and When

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky, January 2022. Bella Hadid, March 2022. Addison Rae in a 2006 Brazil number ten with Ronaldinho on the back, black Sambas underneath, Los Angeles, 14 December 2022, five days after Brazil went out of the World Cup. Kim Kardashian in a Diadora Roma shirt with Ina Assitalia across the front, January 2023. Julia Fox, February 2023. Olivia Rodrigo in a custom Chelsea shirt.

Bella Hadid's most-circulated version came out of a campaign. Balenciaga's Adidas collaboration in late 2022, red oversized football shirt, matching striped track trousers, Hourglass bag with three stripes on it.

Héctor Bellerín, who plays the game and whom Vogue called football's most stylish player, wears his shirts with tailored high-waisted trousers. Liam Gallagher gets named as the original.

The criticism arrived with the attention. Content creators pointed out that the styling had existed elsewhere for decades without a name attached. Vara, a creator with 460,000 TikTok followers, grew up with a Barcelona-supporting mother and a Real Madrid-supporting father. He told Refinery29 he had not heard the word until recently, and that the outfits looked to him like people trying to dress Brazilian.

The complaint lands on who got to name it. Black and Latina women had been styling football, baseball and basketball shirts for decades before a word existed for it.

What Moves the Price

A shirt with that kind of provenance behind it does not come off a rail at one price. Current stock at the Retro Football Shirt Store runs from £90 for an Italy away from 1995/96 to £395 for a long-sleeve Newcastle home from 1995/97. In between sit Arsenal away 1999/01 at £120, Hearts away 1990/91 and a Liverpool drill top at £150 each, Japan home 1998/99 at £220.

Reproductions are a different market. A retro remake of a nineties kit goes for around $85 on eBay whatever the club. Modern remakes drop under $30.

Scarcity works the way it does in any collectors' market, which is to say that the shirt worn during the season a club won something will always cost more than the identical shirt from the year before, even though the cloth, the cut, the sponsor and the badge are the same on both, because what the buyer is paying for sits in the memory attached to the garment rather than in the garment. A shirt from a small club in a forgotten season costs almost nothing. Player-issue versions sit at the top of the range.

Condition language matters on the resale sites. Sponsor cracking on a listing means the wordmark is flaking off. Thirty-year-old prints do that. A shirt described as deadstock has never been worn. On that same dealer's shelf, two Portugal shirts from 1994/95 still carrying their tags list at £295 and £350, against £90 to £150 for worn shirts of the same vintage.

Blokette

The feminine variant has its own coinage. A stylist called Alario told Coveteur she started using the word after watching fashion girls style vintage sportswear, adidas in particular, in whimsical and girly ways.

In practice that means a fitted or cropped shirt tucked into a pleated skirt, knee socks, and either Sambas or a chunky loafer underneath. The Sambas carry over unchanged. Everything between them and the shirt changes. A pleated skirt in place of the straight leg, knee socks in place of nothing.

Where to Find One

Depop and Vinted carry the loose supply, listed by people clearing wardrobes. Prices swing on how much the seller knows. Classic Football Shirts runs the largest catalogue and prices to the market.

Filter by sponsor. The wordmark narrows a search faster than a club name. A search for Sharp returns Manchester United between 1982 and 2000, no season knowledge required. Check the photographs for sponsor cracking, and treat the letter on the label as decoration.

Sleeve length narrows the field further. Long-sleeve kits from the period exist in smaller numbers and sit above the short-sleeve equivalent on price.

What the Trade Is Worth

Classic Football Shirts, started in Manchester in 2006 by Doug Bierton and Matthew Dale, with Gary Bierton joining later, turned over £24.47 million in the year to June 2023, up a quarter on the year before. Pre-tax profit more than doubled, to £5.47 million. The Chernin Group put $38.5 million into it in May 2024. Shops opened on Canal Street in New York that month and on North Fairfax in Los Angeles in October, ahead of a World Cup on the continent.

The shoe side crested earlier. Footwear News named the Samba shoe of the year for 2023, and adidas credited it for a 17 per cent jump in wholesale revenue. By 2024 the sell-through was slipping, 36 per cent of Samba styles reaching majority sell-out against 53 per cent in March 2023, and the Campus was outselling it in some markets.

Adidas now runs a page on its own site under the word blokecore, four years after a stranger coined it.
