1. Oversized Hoodie, Straight Pant, Clean Sneaker

A heavyweight hoodie two sizes up, a straight or tapered pant, a low leather sneaker in white or black. A cap if you want one, and leave the neck bare. From across the street it draws as a soft block on two clean verticals, heavy at the top and light at the foot.

Build this one first. The straight leg holds a line under all that fabric.

The big hoodie has been ordinary for about a decade. Balenciaga hired Demna Gvasalia as creative director in October 2015, and his first collection there, in March 2016, ran on exaggerated shoulders and enormous outerwear. Ten years on, the size is a given. Placement changes the outfit now.

Buy a hoodie that was cut loose. A regular one in a bigger size behaves differently. Put it on and watch the shoulder seam. On the loose cut it sits halfway down your arm and stays there. Size up a regular one and the seam arrives there by accident, carried down by the weight of the fabric with your collar following it.

2. One Printed Tee, Three Bottoms

Take a single printed tee and put it over three different bottoms. The tee never changes. Everything else about the outfit does.

Over a baggy jean it draws a rectangle on a column, and the print sits at chest height with a long quiet run of denim below it. Every rail is mostly printed tees and plain denim. This one costs little to assemble.

Over a wide cargo pant the weight moves to the pockets at mid-thigh, and the tee stops being the loud piece. Tuck the front hem and the outfit reads utility instead.

Over a tailored trouser the print does the whole job. Nothing else in it is competing. A five-dollar graphic and a hundred-dollar trouser end up in the same sentence.

One tee, three outfits. Tees date to the season they were printed. Put the money in the bottoms.

3. Tee, Hoodie, Open Jacket

Start with the longest thing you own and work outward. A long tee, then a shorter hoodie, then a jacket that ends somewhere else again, with an inch of the tee showing at the cuff.

Base layer on. Check the hem in the mirror; it wants to sit lower than everything that follows.

Hoodie over it, shorter. An inch or two of tee showing at the bottom, another inch at the cuff. Two horizontals now, at two heights.

Jacket over that, open. Three hems in view, two verticals down the front where it hangs, a flash of the base layer at each wrist.

Last check before the door. Every hem that matters stays on the outside. Depth in place of thickness, where a coat would give you one surface.

4. The Matching Set

A zip jacket and a matching pant in one cloth, a plain tee underneath, a flat shoe, bare wrists.

The set arrived as one object, and that origin lets it run loose on both halves at once.

One cloth carries from shoulder to ankle. You get a single uninterrupted color from shoulder to ankle, calm and a little formal with it.

Fabric does more of that work than cut. Velour, terry, tricot and brushed poly all say tracksuit. A wool or a heavy cotton in the same pattern says suit.

Zip the jacket up. Now you are in sportswear. Leave it open over a plain tee. That second surface turns a kit into an outfit, with the color and any lettering across the back doing the rest.

5. Rib Tank, Wide Pant, Leather Loafer

One oversized piece is the working ceiling. Here that piece is the pant. The top comes in close and the shoe stays firm. A fitted rib tank or bodysuit, a wide-leg pant, a leather loafer or a clean white sneaker.

Count what you own before buying anything else. Fitted pieces are the shortage in most wardrobes. A rib tank costs less than anything else in the outfit and gets bought last. Structured pieces run out next, and a leather sneaker covers that for one purchase.

The tank at the waist and the loafer at the foot are the two firm points in an outfit that is otherwise all give.

The rapper A$AP Rocky, whose own label and Under Armour deal make him easier to read as a dresser than most, wore the menswear version in New York: baggy Balenciaga cargo jeans as the one loose piece, a vintage motocross tee with a Monster Energy sponsor across the chest, and his own Under Armour sneakers.

6. Cropped Hoodie, Wide Pant

A cropped hoodie and a wide pant, on a five-foot-two frame and a five-foot-ten one.

At five foot ten there is room between the waistband and the shoulder. A longer crop works, and the pant can stack on the shoe. The line runs long enough that a second horizontal does no damage.

At five foot two the same pant swallows the leg unless the top comes up. Angharad Jones writes about dressing at five foot four and wears oversized on oversized: a cropped top sitting on the waistband holds up over wide pants.

The waistband gives you the one horizontal in the whole outfit. It sits higher on a shorter frame and anywhere you like on a taller one.

Pick the pant first and the shoe second. A wide leg that stacks on the laces wants a low sneaker, and a cropped leg that stops above the ankle wants something finishing below the ankle bone.

7. One Branded Piece, Everything Else Blank

One thing with a logo on it, then surplus, workwear, blank heavyweight tees or plain denim around it. There is more unbranded stock on any rail than branded.

One logo at a time. The streetwear guide on MasterClass puts it the same way: show one mark, fill in around it with unmarked pieces.

Collabs are the exception. A Nike shoe with Off-White text down the side was made to carry both names.

8. Cargo Pant, Nylon Jacket, Plain Tee

A cotton drill cargo pant, a ripstop nylon jacket over it, a plain tee underneath, and a low sneaker. Two fabrics, one color family, plain surfaces throughout.

Fleece takes light in and keeps it. Soft edges, matte throughout, the warmest surface in the outfit.

Ripstop nylon throws light straight back at you in a hard line down the sleeve. Sharp and cool, the piece a passerby registers first.

Corduroy runs light in stripes. The pile looks like texture at a distance and like line up close.

Waxed canvas goes darker along every fold and holds the mark. It looks worn-in on day one.

Black on black is the hard case. Three fibers take three different dyes: cotton gets a fiber-reactive dye that bonds to the fiber chemically, nylon gets an acid dye that diffuses into the amorphous regions between the crystalline ones, polyester takes a disperse dye driven in under pressure at around 130 degrees. The chemistry decides how the color goes on. Whether that black leans warm or cool comes from the recipe at the mill, and two mills rarely land on the same one. Hold a cotton hoodie next to a nylon jacket at a window and one of them will usually pull warm or cool against the other. Pair any two of these and the outfit gains depth at one or two colors: calm from across the road, detailed up close.

9. Three Neutrals, One Bright Piece

Black, gray and off-white through the outfit, then one saturated piece over the top. A red nylon jacket is the version that pays back fastest.

Put it over the hoodie outfit and the block of color sits at the shoulders. Put it over the all-black build and the print on the tee has company. Put it over the tracksuit and the set stops reading as sportswear.

Three, then one. Most styling guides land on two colors, three at a push. Neutrals stretch that count. The first three stay in the background. Count the shoes and the bag before the clothes, though: a white sneaker and a black bag is already two.

Rihanna, who has run Fenty since 2017, went shopping in Aspen with Rocky on 28 December 2023, the two of them in matching oversized gray hoodies. She put baggy jeans and a white blazer with hers, he put silver pants with his, and the tan boots were the same on both. One base, two outfits, and the difference came from what went over it.

Clean, deliberate, cheerful in one place. Everything else sits back, and the jacket holds all the color in the outfit.

10. Collared Jacket, Tee, Wide Pant

A single-breasted jacket in wool or a dry cotton, bought a size up from your suit size. A tailored fit over a heavyweight tee pulls at the button, and the drop shoulder that looks sloppy in a suit looks correct here.

Dinner: the jacket over a plain heavyweight tee, a wide pant, a clean leather sneaker. Nothing tucked. The lapel gives a hard line at the chest, the tee keeps the neck open, and volume in the leg holds it clear of business dress.

Daytime: same jacket, same pant, swap the tee for a hoodie underneath. The hood breaks the collar line, and the jacket goes from evening to afternoon.

Cold: same jacket over a thin knit, with the sleeves pushed. The jacket is the outer layer here. The size up leaves room for the knit.

Berlin runs this with utility pieces underneath and Paris runs it with cleaner ones. Both keep the sneaker.

Check It Before You Go Out

Back up to the doorway and take a photo. The hem you thought was right sits low. That third layer you were pleased with just looks like bulk. The jean that cleared the floor in the mirror is dragging at the heel.

In a mirror you look at your face. A photo gives you the outline, the part a stranger sees first.

Change one small thing. His three-percent rule covers this. For The Ten, the 2017 Nike collaboration, he added exposed stitching, handwritten text and see-through panels and left everything else recognisable. Take the outer layer off, or swap the white sneaker for the black one, or roll the cuff twice. Any of those takes ten seconds and moves the outline further than buying something would.
