What Counts as Goth

The description that gets quoted most is Ted Polhemus's. It runs black velvet, lace, fishnet, and leather, worn with corsetry, gloves, and silver. Almost every later list is a version of that one.

Nineteenth-century mourning dress supplied the silhouette, the high collars, the long sleeves, the velvet, lace, and fishnet. Punk handed over the hardware, and the face came from glam. The three came from separate places. A wardrobe leaning on only one of them lands somewhere else entirely.

Cintra Wilson traced contemporary goth style back to the Victorian cult of mourning, and Valerie Steele has done the historical work on it. The borrowing reaches further back than Victoria. The ruff and the high standing collar are Elizabethan, and both keep turning up on the romantic end of the wardrobe.

Deep purple, oxblood and burgundy turn up as accents, with white at the collar or cuff. Silver reads right on this palette, and gold reads as a different set of references.

The face belongs on the garment list. That list runs pale foundation, heavy dark eyeliner, dark lips, and hair dyed black. The same clothes photographed on a bare face read as ordinary black clothing.

Every Full Outfit Fills the Same Eight Slots

A components list and an assembled look are different problems. Two arrangements cover almost everything worn under the name, and both fill the same slots in the same order.

The eighties version ran narrow from the neck down. The hair was the only part of it with any width.

The current arrangement runs that same list with the wide part moved down to the clothes. A black graphic long sleeve or a heavyweight tee goes on first. Over it comes a jacket or hooded sweatshirt cut big enough to drape, then wide trousers, then the same boots underneath. Silver stays at the throat and on the hands, the face still counts, and the hair can lie flat, with the jacket now the biggest thing in the outfit.

Gothic and Goth Are Not the Same Word

The two words aren't interchangeable. Gothic has meant medieval northern European architecture since the sixteenth century, and shadow-heavy fiction since the eighteenth. Somebody shortened it in the 1980s, and what came out points at people.

The Word Was an Insult First

Goth started as a critic's word. Nick Kent reviewed a Siouxsie and the Banshees concert in July 1978 and compared them to the Doors and early Velvet Underground, calling those bands gothic rock architects. He used the adjective again in March 1979 on Magazine's second album, describing the sound as dank neo-Gothic. Both reviews were about records.

Martin Hannett was producing Joy Division later in 1979 when he called what they made dancing music with gothic overtones. On 15 September that year Tony Wilson of Factory Records used the same adjective for the same band on the BBC program Something Else. Melody Maker caught up in February 1980 and filed Joy Division under gothic gloom. Closer came out a few months after Ian Curtis died, and Sounds reviewed it with the same word again.

Then it soured. Critics started swinging it at bands, Bauhaus above all, meaning theatrical and derivative by it. It stayed a term of abuse for roughly two years. Around 1982 the scene took the word over and started flying it, the same year the Batcave opened in Soho and gave everyone an address.

Andrew Eldritch of the Sisters of Mercy has spent decades refusing the label, and a fair number of the founding figures took the same position. By the time the word settled, writers were counting goths alongside the decade's other dress-defined groups, the new age travelers and the ravers.

The Clothes Were Built for These Records

Bauhaus cut Bela Lugosi's Dead live in a single take at Beck Studios in Wellingborough on 26 January 1979, six weeks after the band had formed, during a six-hour session. Small Wonder released it that August as a twelve-inch running 9:36. Peter Murphy comes in at nearly three minutes. What fills that space is a ticking drum figure, a descending dub bassline, guitar soaked in echo. It missed the mainstream chart and sat on the independent listings for over two years.

That is the tempo the clothes were built for. Slow, wide, more bass than guitar, with room in it to move at a walk. A coat that drags reads as intentional at that speed.

Daniel Ash of Bauhaus has pointed out the joke buried in the name. The band took it from a design school organised around function. He calls that the opposite of gothic.

Whether you have to listen is a separate question, and it has two camps that have been at it since the word appeared. One side holds that the music is the membership condition. A recent academic account of goth music makes that case at length, treating the sound as the thing that keeps scenes on different continents recognisable to each other. The answer to it is that most of those clubs have shut, and people now arrive through clothes, film and forums. Arriving by a different door is still arriving. Both positions sit inside the scene, and the argument will outlast this page.

Goth Started in Leeds, Three Years Before London

John Keenan started the F Club as a punk night in a Leeds Polytechnic common room in the summer of 1977. Le Phonographique opened in a shopping centre basement in 1979, a small dancefloor with a mirrored pillar in the middle of it, and it ran until 2005. The Warehouse opened the same year. The Sisters of Mercy formed in Leeds in 1980, the March Violets in 1981, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry alongside them. London got the Batcave in 1982, three years after the Leeds rooms were already full. Mass youth unemployment ran across the north of England through those years, and the scene came out of a generation with time and no prospects. The politics were not decorative either. Under those conditions the Sisters printed a shirt carrying the white rose of Yorkshire and the words People's Republic of West Yorkshire.

Four People on Stage Fixed the Look

Siouxsie Sioux set the eye, heavy black liner run out past the socket, with backcombed hair, mesh and leather around it. Robert Smith of the Cure smeared his version of the same liner. He left the red mouth alone, deliberately less controlled than she was. Peter Murphy of Bauhaus went tall and gaunt with a high collar. Andrew Eldritch wore sunglasses and black. Everything since is a rearrangement of those four.

Three of the four are men in full makeup, and the scene kept that rule long after the bands stopped mattering. Male goths wear cosmetics at a far higher rate than men outside the subculture. Researchers who spent time in goth clubs found the scene privileges the feminine and lets men perform it. Lace, velvet, skirts and corsetry are available to anybody who wants them. Which side of that line a person dresses on is not a membership question here.

Why Two Blacks Never Match

A neutral black gets mixed from blue, red, and yellow chromophores, and they fade at different rates. Brown or grey, the dye house settled that long before you bought the thing. Sulphur black is the cheap one, sitting on the fiber and uncovering the greyish-white cotton core as it goes. Spend more and the mill can use reactive black. That one bonds covalently and holds. With pigment black you are looking at a coating on the surface, and it wears where the garment creases.

A mill that wants deep black on cotton cheaply reaches for sulphur black, one of the highest-volume dyes in the world at roughly 100,000 tons a year. It goes on in a soluble reduced form, sorbs into the fiber, then oxidizes back into pigment, leaving a little of it loose on the outside where friction lifts it off. The chemistry just works that way, and the trade prices sulphur black for what it is, cheap and deep and rub-sensitive.

The trade has a number for all this. A crockmeter drags a white cotton square across the cloth under a set load, ten cycles dry and ten wet. A grader scores the transfer from 5 at the clean end down to 1 at the heavy end. Wet is where black gives way. Every black garment in a shop has a position on that scale, and the number stays inside the supply chain.

Streetwear black is usually built to fade. A mill sews the shirt from undyed cloth first, then drops the whole thing in the bath and hands you something already looking lived in. Goth needs black to stay where it is. Every piece in the outfit has to sit at the same value.

Which is where the trouble starts. Lay out four black pieces bought at different times. One reads brown, one reads charcoal, and only two of them agree. A dyer matches each batch against a standard, and holding a deep shade to that standard is the hardest job in the room. The heavier the dye load, the further a small drift in liquor ratio, temperature or time pushes the finished color.

Other clothes have the same problem and dodge it. Cut a navy suit from one roll and the matching happens at the mill, one step ahead of the buyer. In denim the mismatch is the selling point. Goth is left asking for agreement between garments bought years apart, in the hardest shade to repeat.

People inside it worked around that long ago. They buy the pieces that have to agree in one go, and they check the color outside the shop door. Store lighting hides a difference the street will show them inside a block.

How to Re-dye a Black at Home

Re-dyeing at home has been the scene's answer to a drifting black since the Leeds basements, and one number on the care label decides whether it will work. Rit publishes the threshold. Under 35 percent synthetic content, all-purpose dye works in hot tap water. At 35 percent or over, you need the disperse dye made for synthetics instead. That one goes in a pot on the stove, held near boiling at about 200°F for at least half an hour. A washing machine tops out well below that temperature, and machine-dyed polyester comes out pale for the same reason.

The higher the polyester content in a poly-cotton piece, the lighter it finishes, since the cotton drinks the dye and the polyester holds it off.

Clothing is normally sewn with polyester thread, which will not take a cotton dye. Dye a cotton garment black at your stove and the stitching stays exactly the color it already was. Mills that garment-dye on purpose switch to soft cotton thread for that reason.

So the composition line sets a lifespan. Cotton and mostly-cotton blacks can be brought back three or four times across a decade. A black at sixty percent polyester takes the synthetic dye and the stovetop, then lands at its own value rather than the rail's.

The Shoulder Seam Dates the Garment

Eighties goth ran narrow. Tight sleeves, cinched waists, long lean skirts, everything close to the body, and the hair backcombed out past the shoulders. The 2000s and early 2010s went narrower still, into skinny jeans, tight band shirts, drainpipe everything. What goths wear now is wide everywhere the eighties were narrow, in oversized hoodies, draped jackets, wide trousers, layers cut off-centre.

Find the shoulder seam. If it sits on the bony point of your shoulder, you're holding a set-in sleeve from the narrow lineage. If it sits partway down your upper arm, that's a dropped shoulder from the current one. The seam tells you which of the two decades a garment was drawn in, whatever year the label says it was made.

The Same Symbols Keep Coming Back

Goth borrows religious and occult imagery, then wears it as picture. Silver jewelry carrying religious or occult motifs is one of the few constants across every branch of the subculture.

The set that keeps coming back is small. You get the ankh, the pentagram, the cross either way up, bats, spiders and webs, roses, moons, skulls. The ankh came in through the eighties scene and reads as a period marker more than a belief. Look at a cross in this context and you are closer to Victorian mourning jewelry than to church. Traditional goth keeps them small, at the throat, the hands, the ears. On goth-adjacent streetwear they go big across the chest panel, and a piece of jewelry blown up to that size stops being jewelry and turns into a graphic.

Emo, Metal and Punk Are Not Goth

Emo came out of American post-hardcore in the late eighties and nineties. You're looking at narrow denim, band shirts, studded belts, a side fringe, and a register closer to confession.

The black, the long hair and the boots also belong to heavy metal, and its sources sit somewhere else. The mourning silhouette, the Victorian reference, the pale face all stay on the goth side. Metal wears denim and patches.

Punk is the direct parent, though goth is not a branch of it. It came out of post-punk, the thing British bands built once punk had run its course, and the two scenes overlapped for about a year before they split. Goth took the hardware and left the music, the register, the references.

Most People Wear Two or Three Substyles at Once

Each one keeps a different part of the original grammar.

Who Decides Who Counts

Nancy Kilpatrick's Goth Bible wrote the vocabulary down and defined the poseur as a visitor who wants the crowd without the sensibility. One contributor goes harder and calls them Batbabies, kids buying the look off a mall rack with their parents' money. That was the nineties, and the scene has been running some version of that test for forty years.

Festivals are where it happens in person. Wave-Gotik-Treffen started at a Leipzig club in 1992 with about two thousand people, and it now runs past twenty thousand across more than fifty venues over the Pentecost weekend. Whitby Goth Weekend in Yorkshire, M'era Luna, and Amphi in Cologne carry the rest of the calendar.

The 2026 version runs online, on the same engine, with the parties swapped. Two stores rank for this exact question right now, selling opposite answers. One lays goth out as nineteen purchasable substyles, each with a matching product and a five-line formula, and tells you to pick whichever suits you. Refusing to be a glossary is where the second one starts, and it argues that the mainstream boom has thrown up mass-produced approximations the scene is rejecting. It draws its line between people wearing the aesthetic and people living it, putting handmade construction on the good side. Both of them leave the garment itself out of the question.

This page is the third shop. A brand that sells black graphic shirts publishes it, and it links to its own collections further down.

My Read

Everything the scene uses to sort real from fake turns out to be a question about shopping. In the nineties you got asked which shop your clothes came from. Now you get asked whether you picked your substyle off a menu or paid somebody to build it by hand. That's forty years of asking about the receipt.

What bothers me is that the clothes themselves never get a hearing. A goth wardrobe gets assembled one piece at a time over years, and black is the shade a dye house has the hardest time hitting twice. Every wardrobe built that way ends up holding blacks that drift apart.

A mismatch tells you about dye lots, and about a jacket in service since 1984 that went through the dye pot twice. The scene reads it as a statement about the person, and that's the part I can't get past.

If I want to know something real about a black garment I go at the cloth. Damp a scrap of white cotton and rub it on the sleeve. What lifts onto it is dye that was only ever sitting on the surface. The trade has been scoring that transfer for decades.

Related Styles

Deathrock sits nearest, out of the same years on the other side of the Atlantic. Post-punk is further back, and that is where the sound came from. From punk you get the studs, the boots and the outward-facing posture. Grunge lends the washed black and the layering without any of the theater, and industrial and rave feed cyber goth from the far side.

Streetwear is the one that changed the silhouette, and its blacks are made to move. Washed black graphics fade on purpose, and that answers a question this page has not been asking. What overlaps is the cut, and it runs through graphic black tees far enough that one shirt reads either way depending on what goes over it.
