Style Guide Concert Outfits for Men by Venue and Genre Supermade EditorialOctober 20, 202611 min read If you don't know what the room will be like, wear dark indigo jeans and a plain black tee with broken-in leather boots, plus an unlined flannel overshirt on top. Dark denim and black won't show a spilled drink or sweat as much. Once the room heats up, take the overshirt off and knot the sleeves at your waist. Club Shows: Rock, Punk, Metal, and Indie Arena and Stadium Tours Country Shows Festivals and Outdoor Amphitheaters Raves Concert Halls and Jazz Clubs Band Tees, Shorts, and Other Details Club Shows: Rock, Punk, Metal, and Indie Expect to sweat through whatever you have on once a club floor fills up. Wear the thinnest tee you own. In a 2025 study, Oklahoma State University researchers tested nine sportswear knits and found the thicker ones dried more slowly. All-polyester dried about four times as fast as cotton, with a knit of 91% polyester and 9% spandex close behind. A 50/50 cotton-poly blend dried only about a third faster than plain cotton. If you're buying a tee for the show, look for at least 90% polyester on the label. For cotton, go thin; Gildan's Softstyle tee weighs 4.5 ounces per square yard. Commenters on an Ask MetaFilter thread about punk shows told people to wear closed-toe shoes because feet get stepped on in a crowd that tight. Spilled drinks end up underfoot too. Pick shoes or boots with rubber soles. The 9:30 Club in D.C. strongly advises sensible footwear on its FAQ page. Leave suede and new white sneakers at home. An old pair of canvas high-tops is fine if you don't care what happens to them. In warm weather, bring only the overshirt and keep your phone, cards, ID, and keys in your pockets. The 9:30 Club's coat check runs only in the colder months: $5 an item, with nowhere to leave jackets or bags the rest of the year. Any bag you bring there gets searched. The Fillmore in San Francisco turns away backpacks but lets in bags up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches, giving any bag that isn't clear an extra search. Once you're inside you can't leave and come back. Bring the jacket you'll want for the walk home. Rock and Indie Pair a band tee, or a plain black one, with slim straight black jeans and leather boots for a rock show. Make sure the tee fits at the shoulder seams and the jeans clear the boot shaft without bunching up. Save the leather jacket for nights when the club is checking coats. A faded olive or rust tee with mid-wash straight jeans and beat-up canvas sneakers fits an indie show, with a corduroy chore coat on cold nights. Metal and Punk For a metal show you'll want black from the band shirt down to the boots, with lace-up boots laced tight if you're going into the pit. Before you head in, put your earplugs in and strap your glasses on. Rings and dangling earrings are safer in a pocket. If you want a jacket, wear a plain black denim one. At a punk show, keep the black jeans and boots and put pins on a jacket you already own. Check the venue's rules before you wear spikes. The 9:30 Club lists chains and spikes as weapons and bans spiked jewelry outright at some shows. A wallet chain can cause trouble too; the Kia Forum in Inglewood doesn't allow metal chain wallets. Arena and Stadium Tours Plan on carrying almost nothing into Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, where the only bag you can bring is a clutch or wallet under 5 by 9 by 1 inches unless it's a medical or parental bag. Anything bigger goes in a rented locker outside. Keep your phone and keys in zip pockets. For a winter show at TD Garden in Boston, wear an insulated jacket you can hold on your lap, because the arena has no public coat check and no lockers. Bags are capped at 6 by 4 by 1.5 inches, clear bags included. That's wristlet or small-crossbody size. A heavier coat can go in a bag to the Event Bag Check for $15. It opens two hours before the event and closes an hour after it ends. MetLife Stadium in New Jersey takes one clear bag up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches or a one-gallon freezer bag, plus a clutch up to 4.5 by 6.5 inches. A folded hoodie fits in the clear bag. Backpacks and fanny packs aren't allowed. A bag that doesn't pass can go to the bag check outside the gates, which charges $5 for anything that isn't an NFL game. With a reserved seat, leather-soled shoes are safe because nobody will be stepping on your feet. A leather jacket over a button-down or knit polo works there too. Pop Tours Before a pop show, check the artist's site and fan accounts for a dress theme. Chappell Roan set one for each concert on the fall 2023 leg of her Midwest Princess Tour; in Chicago and D.C. it was Pink Cowgirl. Join in with one themed piece over a plain base, such as a pink snap-front western shirt or a metallic overshirt worn open over a white tee with dark jeans and clean sneakers. Keep the theme to an actual shirt, since Crypto.com Arena bans costumes, props, full face masks, and face paint. If your themed piece lights up, don't wear it to SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, which prohibits clothing that is battery operated or contains lights. Hip-Hop Start a hip-hop outfit with the sneakers and pick one of their colors for a fitted cap, then keep everything else neutral. That means baggy jeans or cargos that stack a little on the shoe and a heavyweight tee in a boxy cut, under a varsity jacket if you need a layer. On a packed floor, wear an older pair of sneakers and a mesh jersey in place of the heavy tee. For the heavyweight tee, look for 6 ounces per square yard or more on the spec sheet. Los Angeles Apparel's 1801 is 6.5 ounces of 100% cotton. Gildan's "Heavy Cotton" tee falls short at 5.3 ounces. Rolling Loud, the hip-hop festival, banned ski masks and full face coverings under the 2025 rules for its California edition. The same rules allowed hats. Country Shows The Shirt and the Jeans Wear a snap-front western shirt in chambray, or flannel on a cold night, tucked into jeans with a leather belt. If you don't have a western shirt at all, a plain chambray one will do, and brown leather work boots can stand in for cowboy boots. The jeans need a leg opening wide enough to go over the boot shaft. Levi's 517 bootcut opens to 18 1/4 inches at the hem in size 32 and sits at your waist, which suits a tucked shirt. Wrangler's 13MWZ has a straighter 16 3/4-inch leg that Boot Barn sells as fitting over boots. If you want the hem to stack, Ariat's fit guide suggests buying 2 to 4 inches more inseam than usual and letting it hover around the top of the heel without dragging behind you. Boots For line dancing at a honky-tonk, wear leather soles, which Ariat says make pivots and turns easier on smooth indoor dance floors. Bridlen, a Goodyear-welted shoemaker, warns that leather soles can be slick when new and slippery when wet. For an arena floor with drinks on it, or festival grass and gravel, pick rubber soles. They also don't need a long break-in. At a festival, wear ropers, the style Ariat rates best for walking longer distances. Tecovas puts a roper's shaft at about 10 inches, above a short, square heel. Ropers usually come with rubber soles, but Lucchese's Tanner roper has a leather one. Check the outsole before you buy a pair for grass and gravel. Texas Monthly's boot-buying guide says a new pair should fit like a firm handshake, snug but with your toes flat and a little room to wiggle. Lucchese's fit guide says some heel slip in the first few wears is normal and doesn't mean the boots fit wrong. It suggests at least 2 to 3 hours of wear on each of the first 6 to 8 outings. Don't size down to stop the slip. The Hat Only bring a cowboy hat if it's already part of what you wear. The old rule, which the hat company Resistol still repeats, is to switch from straw to felt after Labor Day. Take the hat off if it's blocking someone's view. Festivals and Outdoor Amphitheaters The Afternoon For the afternoon heat, wear a loose linen shirt open over a tee, with lightweight shorts and sunglasses. Add a packable sun hat with a full brim; REI rates one above a baseball cap for shade. Over a whole day, smell starts to matter as much as how fast the tee dries. In odor tests at New Zealand's University of Otago, wool fabrics smelled faintest and polyester strongest. Wear a merino tee, with cotton as the backup. On your feet, wear broken-in sneakers or boots with deep tread. At Red Rocks outside Denver, the walk from the parking lots to the gates can be partly dirt, uphill, and long, depending on when you arrive. Underneath, wear padded acrylic socks. Podiatrist Douglas Richie, writing in Podiatry Management, describes a 1990 study of runners who all wore padded socks. The cotton pairs went with twice as many blisters as the acrylic ones, and those blisters were three times bigger. A 1993 follow-up with unpadded socks couldn't show that advantage. After Dark and in the Rain The Hollywood Bowl warns that it can get chilly later in the evening and tells people to bring a blanket or an extra jacket. Pack a hoodie for after sunset. For rain, bring a hooded shell that folds into its own pocket. Red Rocks bans umbrellas and recommends having a poncho on hand, since its shows usually go on through full sun, strong wind, and even severe rain or snow. The Bag Coachella allows a backpack up to 18 by 13 by 8.5 inches. If it doesn't fit the festival's sizing box once it's packed, you won't get in. Measure it with the hoodie and shell already inside. Indio, where the festival runs in April, has an average April high near 86°F and a low near 63°F in NOAA's 1991-2020 normals. The Thermal airport, about six miles from the festival's polo grounds, averages an April low of about 55°F. At Lollapalooza, any bag bigger than 6 by 9 inches, other than an empty hydration pack, has to be clear and smaller than 12 by 6 by 12. A clear bag that size holds the hoodie and the shell. With a one-pocket fanny pack under 6 by 9 inches, which doesn't have to be clear, you'll be wearing the hoodie or carrying it. Raves EDC Las Vegas tells ravers to wear lightweight, breathable clothes and warns that sandals and flip-flops can make for sore feet. For a night of dancing, go with cushioned running shoes you can get off and back on quickly, because security there may ask you to take your shoes off. Wear a mesh tank, or a white tee under an unbuttoned camp-collar shirt, with shorts or light joggers. A chemistry FAQ from Frostburg State University explains that the brighteners in laundry detergent usually make a washed white tee glow under black light. The festival runs rain or shine and asks people to come prepared for all types of weather. EDC is held in May, and the National Weather Service puts the average May low in Las Vegas at about 66°F in its temperature overview. A camp-collar shirt should be enough for the coolest hours. EDC's guidelines allow glowing or light-up costumes and jewelry but turn away costumes that look like security or event-staff uniforms, high-visibility vests included. For a bag, bring a clear one up to 12 by 6 by 12 inches, a clutch up to 6 by 9, or an empty hydration pack with no more than two main compartments and one small one. Bring a few kandi bracelets, the homemade bead bracelets ravers trade with a PLUR handshake. An entry in USC's Digital Folklore Archives says you'll usually get one back for each one you give. Concert Halls and Jazz Clubs For the symphony, wear dark wool trousers or clean dark jeans with an oxford shirt and leather loafers. People answering an Ask MetaFilter question about symphony attire said dark jeans are fine as long as they aren't ripped, faded, or baggy, and they ruled out sneakers, sandals, and shorts. The San Francisco Symphony's guide for first-timers lists business, cocktail, casual, and creative attire in its audience, with only the Opening Gala more formal. At the opera, the Met has no dress code at all and recommends clothing appropriate for a professional setting. In a separate MetaFilter thread, a first-time operagoer heard from commenters that evening shows run dressier than matinees. Add a navy blazer at night. The Met's FAQ says people tend to dress more formally for openings of new productions and calls it optional. A dark suit and tie covers an opening that isn't a gala. Every Met gala is black tie, including the Opening Night Gala that starts the season, and some galas are premieres of new productions. Black tie means a tuxedo and bow tie, and a rental is fine. Dark jeans, a knit polo, and leather shoes cover the smart casual that the Blue Note in New York recommends, even though it doesn't set a dress code. Band Tees, Shorts, and Other Details The Band's Own Shirt Uproxx critic Steven Hyden says metal fans routinely wear the headliner's shirt to the show and puts the rule against it down mostly to indie crowds. A Straight Dope thread on concert-shirt rules makes an exception for an old, out-of-print tour shirt of the band. If you'd rather not test it, wear a related band's shirt and buy tonight's on the way out. Shorts Wear shorts to club shows, arenas, and festivals if you like, and skip them at the symphony, the opera, and smart-casual jazz clubs like the Blue Note. Go with plain chino shorts in navy or khaki that stop at or just above the knee, plus sneakers. At a summer rock or punk show, black denim shorts go with the rest of a dark outfit. Going Shirtless Barclays Center in Brooklyn requires every guest to wear a shirt and shoes at all times. Crypto.com Arena's A-Z Guide has the same rule. Coming Straight From Work Wear the band tee under your work shirt and take the work shirt off once you're inside, tied at the waist like the overshirt above. If you have a floor ticket, swap your work shoes for the sneakers or boots you'd wear to a club before you leave the office. Graphic Tees That Get You Stopped SoFi Stadium bans clothing that is commercial, obscene, offensive, inflammatory, or political. A political slogan or a shirt advertising a business could get you stopped there. At Barclays Center, the line is garments with offensive language, phrasing, or symbols.
