Style Guide Shoes for Baggy Pants, Matched to Where the Hem Lands Supermade EditorialOctober 22, 20268 min read Baggy pants end in one of four places: just off the floor, at the top of the shoe's heel, at the ankle bone, or gathered in at the ankle. A floor-length hem hides everything but the toe and only stays clean if the sole holds it off the ground. Raise the hem to the heel and the sides of the shoe come into view. An ankle-bone hem shows the whole shoe and a strip of ankle above it. A gathered cuff pulls the fabric clear of the shoe altogether. How the Shoe Moves the Hem Just Off the Floor At the Top of the Heel At the Ankle Bone Gathered In at the Ankle When the Hem Lands Too Low for Your Shoes Products by Hem Length How the Shoe Moves the Hem Trousers that land just right over heels can break a little too much over sneakers. The pants and the person wearing them are the same in both cases. A pair hemmed for heels needs more length than one hemmed for flats. Say a pair lands where you want it over sneakers with a 1-inch sole, and you'd like to wear it with 2-inch platforms. The 2-inch sole lifts the hem an inch higher than the 1-inch sole did. Pants an inch longer put it back where it was. The typical petite inseam for full-length wide legs worn with sneakers or low heels is 28 to 30 inches at 5 feet 2 to 5 feet 4. A floor-skimming hem in heels takes 29 to 31 inches for anyone 5 feet 4 and under. Those numbers are only a starting point. Where the hem falls in your own shoes counts for more. Petite sizing stops at 5 feet 4. Taller wearers and most men won't find numbers like these and can go straight to the try-on. Heels and sneakers cover the most ground and work under anything from ankle length down to the floor. Flats stop at full length, and ankle boots belong with cropped or ankle-length pants. Pants longer than ankle length rarely work with both flats and heels, unless it's a bootcut pair worn with heeled boots that slip up under the hem. If you'd rather own one pair for everything, make it an ankle-length straight leg. It works over a 3-inch pump and over your favorite sneakers. A kitten-heel bootie slips right under its hem. A full-length pair has to be matched to one shoe before it's tailored. That's the shoe to wear to the fitting. Just Off the Floor A wide leg's fabric hangs out over the foot. That extra room lets the pants run longer than other cuts. The back of a full-length wide leg should still clear the floor by a quarter to half an inch. A quarter inch of clearance leaves just the tip of the shoe in view. Any lower and the back of the hem drags along the ground with every step. The front of a wide-leg hem should sit lightly on the shoe without burying it. Fabric that pools around the foot only looks right when it's clearly on purpose. A kitten heel's 1 to 2 inches are enough to keep a long hem from settling on the ground. Block heels do the job on sandals and on boots that cover the whole foot; a platform sandal adds height without costing you comfort. Even a modest heel helps wide-leg denim fall more cleanly. Celebrity stylist Brenda Cooper treats a platform sneaker with a bit of heel as a necessity with baggy jeans. It stops the outfit from feeling bulky. Two of our pairs have that kind of raised sole: the canvas German training sneakers and the black-and-white platforms. German training sneakers Black-and-white platforms If a full-length wide pair feels too long, look at the shoes before the hem. Chunky boots and retro sneakers balance out the volume of a wide leg. Low-profile sneakers and penny loafers can work as long as the trousers aren't so wide that your feet disappear under them. A full-length wide pant looks better over a sneaker than over soft ballet flats. A structured flat that holds its shape when you take it off is the one to pick if you can't give up flats. An elongated toe makes it past the edge of the hem and gives the shoe a more polished finish. Pointed toes lengthen the line of the leg, and a nude or tonal shade stretches it further. Narrow boots with a faintly squared toe end the leg on a crisp, angular note. Our black embossed leather ankle boots put a pointed toe on a low stacked heel. Their buckle strap and patterned ankle trim stay out of sight under a floor-length hem. Embossed leather ankle boots At the Top of the Heel A wide leg can be cut shorter, to the top of the shoe's heel, where the heel joins the rest of the shoe. The leg looks longer hemmed there than it does when it stops at the top of the foot. Straight-leg baggy jeans brush the top of the foot in front and end at the top of the shoe behind. There's no break or puddling at that length, and the leg reads as one long line. Jeans worn over Western boots should stop just above the boot heel when you stand. The whole shaft stays covered and nothing drags behind you. A hem at the boot heel hides the high, padded shaft on our sculpted platform snow boots. Only the thick rubber sole and the printed toe show below the hem. Sculpted platform snow boots Sneakers with detail along the side show it off under a hem at the top of the heel. Our white shell-toe sneakers have a puffy upper and two Velcro straps. The gray suede skate shoes are slimmer. Their buckle strap and layered sole are what people notice. White low-top lace-ups go with any denim, baggy jeans included. Ours are perforated leather on a chunky sole, and a wide leg has plenty of shoe to hang over. Shell-toe sneakers Suede skate shoes White leather low-tops A stack keeps the hem at the boot heel and lets the extra length fall in soft folds down the leg. Bootcut and straight-leg jeans have room in the leg for those folds. The relaxed, streetwear-leaning stack usually shows up on slim jeans over boots or sneakers. A very wide or barrel leg doesn't stack. The extra length puddles behind the heel and makes the pair too long for the shoe. Straight-leg jeans stack with about 2 extra inches of inseam for a clean everyday look, or 3 to 4 for a deeper Western one. A shorter stack leaves you more room to move if you're on your feet working all day. Sit down in your boots to check the length. The denim should settle where the foot of the boot meets the shaft. A pair that rides halfway up it is too short to stack. At the Ankle Bone Barrel jeans curve out through the leg and taper back in toward the ankle. They usually land at the ankle bone, give or take a little. Trainers follow that shape best in a streamlined style with a lower sole. Loafers should be flat. A pointed kitten heel sets a sharp, flattering line against the relaxed shape of the jeans. Ballet flats suit barrel jeans at the office or on a smart-casual weekend. The rounded toe picks up the curve of the leg, and the flat sole keeps the look low and grounded. Clogs and sandals look good under a barrel hem that stops a bit above the bone. Our lace-up EVA clogs have a padded strap behind the heel. The platform lace-up clogs are open-backed mules on a chunky EVA sole. Tall, wedged shoes like platform clogs make baggy jeans stand out. Lace-up EVA clogs Platform lace-up clogs Socks are in plain sight under an ankle-bone hem. Loafers and white low-profile sneakers can go without socks under cotton trousers. Flat mules take socks in a contrasting or bright color once the weather turns cold. Pick the longer barrel length, just below the bone, for fall and winter, when loafers and boots come out. Loafers under baggy jeans give a preppy, classic look. An ankle boot slips neatly under the hem when the pants reach at least the ankle bone and the shaft is tight and around 5 inches tall. A slim, heeled pair gives barrel jeans a more polished, structured finish in the colder months. Wide-leg trousers shouldn't be cropped shorter than the ankle bone. A hem halfway down the bone looks the most current. Cropped wide legs tend to look awkward unless they were designed that way. Chunky derbies and other low dress shoes on a thick sole go well with wide-leg trousers, and an ankle-bone hem shows them off in full. A raw, frayed hem should stop no more than two inches above the shoe. Pointed pumps stand out more under a frayed hem or one cut higher up the leg. Gathered In at the Ankle The elastic cuff on joggers pulls the fabric in at the ankle and leaves the whole shoe in view. Their length matters far less than a wide leg's. The cuff holds the hem at the ankle whatever the inseam. Wear them with simple sneakers, or high-tops when it's warm. The cuff ends around the collar of our black side-zip platform high-tops. No loose fabric hangs over the shaft. Cooper wants combat boots in plain view under baggy jeans. She suggests pushing the hem straight into the top of the boot, or tying a ribbon around the jeans at the ankle. The ribbon holds the fabric in and puts the boot front and center. Our camo lace-up ankle boots follow combat-boot lines on a thick rubber sole. Their dual-tone collar stays in view whether the hem is tucked in or tied. A tie at the ankle gives baggy jeans a more blouson look over sheepskin boots. Slouchy boots with the jeans tucked inside take the hem off the ground completely. Side-zip platform high-tops Camo lace-up ankle boots When the Hem Lands Too Low for Your Shoes Baggy jeans that pool over a low shoe can look like they don't fit. A slight roll at the bottom is the quickest fix for that, and the neat edge it leaves anchors the outfit at the ankle. A higher cuff shows off more of the shoe. A pinroll tames a baggy pair into a neater, more modern shape. Shoes Cuff Flats A single cuff, which takes up about 1 inch Low-top sneakers A single cuff, a double cuff of 1.5 inches or more, a half cuff (a deep cuff with the old hem folded halfway back down), or a pinroll High-tops, boots, and platform soles A deep cuff of about 2 inches Oxfords and dress shoes A double cuff, with no socks or a bold pair Slip-ons A pinroll, rolled up twice Heels A half cuff or a pinroll Sandals and Chelsea boots A tight roll, pinched at the hem and rolled up tightly, on thin summer denim only A baggy pair with a long rise can take three or four rolls. A safety pin at the back of the hem lifts the part that drags in low shoes while the front hangs at full length. Products by Hem Length The last column gives the usual hem point for the cut.
